GCPS Denies Wrongdoing in Student’s Death

Spokesperson says school personnel responded appropriately.

The family of a has accused Gwinnett County Public Schools of failing to provide adequate care for their son.

According to Gwinnett County Medical Examiner Ted Bailey, .

A pulmonary embolism occurs when a clot travels through the body and blocks one or more arteries in the lung. Bailey said the origin of the clot is not yet known, but may have been caused by an injury Smith suffered within the past few weeks.

The Atlanta Journal Constitution reports Smith’s parents, Donna Smith and Curtis Parham, said too much time elapsed before school personnel called 911 and that teachers dismissed Smith’s complaints of breathing trouble.

GCPS spokesperson Sloan Roach said school personnel take these types of incidents very seriously.

“When a situation occurs in which a student requires medical attention, school staff members move responsibly and efficiently to get the help needed. That is our expectation and that is what happened in this situation," Roach said in a released statement.
