Dacula, Mill Creek and Hebron students among those honored.

Eight local students have been awarded 2011 University of Georgia Charter Scholarships.

The Charter Scholarships are awarded to incoming freshman with excellent academic records and proven leadership and community involvement. According to a UGA press release, the top 6-8 percent of entering first year students are designated as Charter Scholars.

The scholarship provides students with $1,000 per year in addition to the HOPE scholarship. The scholarship can be renewed for up to three years of undergraduate studies if the recipients meet specified academic standards.
