Mill Creek Football Field Named in Honor of Retiring Principal Dr. Jim Markham

Hawks will now play on Markham Field.

From now on, when Mill Creek teams take to the field, they will be reminded of the man who led through its early years -- an educator with more than four decades of experience.

In a surprise pre-game ceremony on Friday, Aug. 31, the football field at Mill Creek Community Stadium was named Markham Field in honor of . Markham is currently battling a recurrence of cancer and is retiring in order to pursue treatment.

Prior to the kickoff of the Mill Creek versus Dacula game, Markham was presented with a letterman jacket and a plaque to commemorate the field naming.

Dr. Markham has been principal of Mill Creek since its opening in 2004. He served as principal of Berkmar High School from 1994-2004 and was a teacher and assistant principal at Parkview High School from 1991-1993.

Although the Mill Creek football Hawks executed a flawless game plan to perfection, once the game got underway, the game in itself paled in comparison to the brief pre-game ceremonies to honor a great man, educator, and leader by officially naming the Mill Creek football Field "Markham Field" as a lasting tribute to Dr. Jim Markham. As I watched the game between Mill Creek and Dacula I could not help but observe all of the Mill Creek students who were present at the game thinking that no matter what their level of participation was on this Friday evening, August 31, 2012, that perhaps one evening in the future many of these students, now grown, will sit in this same stadium, observe the sign beneath the scoreboard which reads: "Welcome to Markham Field," and reflect back on the indelible impact Dr. Markham made in their lives.
