College Football Scores: SEC Week 3

Florida Atlantic hung with the big Dawgs early, but didn’t have the depth to go the distance as Georgia crushed FAU 56-20. Georgia (3-0) racked up 713 yards of offense “giving fans the blowout that was expected” the Red and Black reports. The Dawgs welcome Vanderbilt to town next week.

Other SEC results from week 3:

No. 1 Alabama 52, Arkansas 0 – The Razorbacks (1-2) were never in the game and suffered through 60 minutes of an absolute shellacking by the Tide (3-0). As CBS reported, “The Crimson Tide controlled every aspect of the game right from the beginning, especially along the line of scrimmage, where they opened holes for six different running backs to combine for 225 yards and six touchdowns.” The Razorbacks took the field without starting quarterback Tyler Wilson, but it is unlikely he could have done much to stop the Alabama onslaught. Next week, Alabama hosts Florida Atlantic and Arkansas hosts Rutgers.

No. 3 LSU 63, Idaho 14 – As Glenn Guilbeau of the News Star wrote, “LSU tried its best to stage its first real game of the season Saturday night, but another opponent failed to show.” The win was the Tigers 20th consecutive victory at home. With USC’s loss to Stanford, LSU (3-0) and Alabama will once again be in familiar territory as the top two teams in the country.

No. 8 South Carolina 49, UAB 6 – Though Steve Spurrier’s Gamecocks (3-0) may have routed UAB, Spurrier still managed to make it sound like an actual contest in his post-game remarks. "Every game is a little different. This was one of the closest 49-6 game I've ever been around," Spurrier told Fox Sports. "They stuffed us pretty good the first half. We were fortunate to get what points we could. Seems like we couldn't get a guy open or hit anybody. It was a struggle." Of course it was Coach. Next up for South Carolina: Missouri.

Auburn 31, Louisiana-Monroe 28 – A scrappy ULM team forced the Tigers (1-2) into overtime and almost managed another SEC upset, but a blocked field goal attempt gave Auburn the chance to squeak by the Warhawks. “Absolutely sensational once again in a loss was Warhawks quarterback Kolton Browning, who threw for 237 yards and three touchdowns while not turning the ball over. The junior dual-threat also used his legs against a seemingly confused Auburn defense, running for 58 yards and a touchdown as well,” wrote Tyler Conway for the Bleacher Report. The Tigers have a week to enjoy the thrill of victory before the other SEC Tigers -- the No. 3 LSU Tigers -- come to town to once again deliver the agony of defeat.

No. 18 Florida 37, Tennessee 20 - It was supposed to be a slug fest, but you would never have known it to watch the second half as the no. 18 Florida Gators (3-0) extended their winning streak over the Tennessee Volunteers (2-1) to eight games with a 37-20 victory in Knoxville. Though Tennessee kept it close during the first half, they were outscored 27-6 after halftime. "We had a good game going until about late in the third (quarter)," Tennessee coach Derek Dooley told the Tampa Bay Times. "We gave up some huge plays and never could get it going on offense. I give Florida a lot of credit. They did a really good job late in the third and early in the fourth, and we couldn't recover. We were a little shell-shocked. Those were just enormous plays in the game." Next week, Florida hosts Kentucky and Tennessee hosts Akron.

Kentucky 31, Western Kentucky 32 – ULM may have fallen short in their bid to upset a SEC team, but the Hilltoppers did not. Kentucky (1-2) fought back from a 17-point deficit to tie the game with just 24 seconds left in regulation play. The Wildcats scored first in overtime and the Hilltoppers followed suit, but went for the two-point conversion on a trick play to take the win. Kentucky heads to Florida next week for their SEC opener.

Ole Miss 31, No. 14 Texas 66 – Longhorn quarterback David Ash completed 19-of-23 passes for a career-high 326 yards and four touchdowns as Texas stomped the Rebels (2-1), Texassports.com reports. Ole Miss travels to Tulane next week.

Mississippi State 30, Troy 24 – In a surprisingly close game, the Bulldogs (3-0) just barely managed to get past Troy. The Shreveport Times reports, “The Bulldogs (3-0) finished their scoring with Bumphis’s 25-yarder at the back of the end zone on fourth-and-4 with 7:00 left. That proved enough in the latest Sun Belt scare against a Southeastern Conference team.” The Bulldogs host South Alabama next week.

Missouri 24, Arizona State 20 – “Missouri (2-1) built a 17-point cushion in the third quarter in front of a sellout crowd of 71,004, the school's first for a non-conference game since Notre Dame in 1984,” ESPN Sports reports. The win for redshirt freshman quarterback  Corbin Berkstresser was made easier by the four turnovers the Missouri defense forced. Mizzou returns to SEC action next week at South Carolina.

Texas A&M 48, SMU 3 – Aggie quarterback Johnny Manziel threw for 305 yards and four touchdowns as Texas A&M (1-1) easily handled the Mustangs. According to the Dallas News, “For the second straight game, the Aggies managed to last the full 60 minutes without turning the ball over. That’s especially impressive with a freshman under center, and it’s crucial for a team that has questions about their ability to hold late leads.” The Aggies host S.C. State next week.

Vanderbilt 58, Presbyterian 0 – Vanderbilt (1-2) outgained Presbyterian 605 yards to 140 as the Commodores easily handled the visiting Blue Hose. “The lopsided score also allowed Vanderbilt to go to its bench early, with four running backs accounting for at least one touchdown and two backs topping 100 yards,” The Times Union reported. Next up for Vanderbilt is a trip to Athens to face the No. 7 Bulldogs.
