College Football Scores: SEC Week 6

Not one, not two, but three top five teams fell Saturday and two of them were in the SEC.

Bulldogs fans remain in mourning today after their hopes of an SEC championship were soundly and thoroughly crushed by the Old Ball Coach and his Gamecocks.

No. 5 Georgia was never even in the game as No. 6 South Carolina jumped out to a 21-0 lead in the first quarter and never looked back.

“On paper, both teams were evenly matched with the oddsmakers making the game a virtual pick 'em,” SB Nation College News reported. “But it was pandemonium at Williams-Brice as the two teams kicked off, and South Carolina instantly responded with a huge first quarter that would decide the game.”

The Bulldogs only narrowly avoided a shutout, finally managing to score in the last two minutes of play in the 35-7 whipping.

Next week, the Bulldogs (5-1) will have a weekend off to lick their collective wounds and South Carolina (6-0) will head to the Bayou to take on LSU.

The other top 5 SEC team to take a fall yesterday was LSU. Previously undefeated No. 4 LSU, which has struggled in recent weeks but still found a way to win, finally met its match Saturday against No. 10 Florida. The Gators beat the Tigers 14-6. “A loss like this could very likely have LSU tumbling out of the top 10. Florida State will now surely be taking the Tigers' No. 3 spot with the Gators possibly moving up to the 6-8 region,” according to SB Nation. Up next: Florida (5-0) travels to Nashville to take on the Commodores and LSU (5-1) will try to regroup against South Carolina.

Joining Georgia and LSU in top 5 defeat misery was No. 3 Florida State. North Carolina State eeked out a 17-16 victory over the Seminoles to pick up their first ACC win of season and totally scramble the rankings.

In Oct. 6 Southeastern Conference action:

Auburn 7, Arkansas 24 – Arkansas (2-4) snapped a four-game losing streak on Saturday, defeating Auburn 24-7. “The Tigers' (1-4, 0-3) struggles on the offensive side of the ball continued as they committed five turnovers. Auburn coach Gene Chizik used three quarterbacks for the first time this season, although none of the three enjoyed much success,” The Kansas City Star reported. Auburn travels to Ole Miss next week and Arkansas will host Kentucky.

Kentucky 14, Mississippi State 27 – The undefeated Mississippi State Bulldogs had another strong outing against the Kentucky Wildcats. “It was all about the Bulldogs, who showed no rust coming off a bye week,” The Mississippi Press reported. “The defense posted its second-fewest yards this season, just 12 more than it allowed in a 28-10 victory over Auburn last month.” The Bulldogs (5-0) will look to extend their SEC win streak next week against Tennessee, while Kentucky (1-5) travels to Arkansas. 

Ole Miss 27, Texas A&M 30 – Aggie quarterback Johnny Manziel struggled early, but managed to save the day in the end leading Texas A&M (4-1) to a comeback win over Ole Miss (3-3). According to the Dallas News, “Manziel accounted for 320 yards of total offense — 191 passing and 129 rushing. The Aggies (4-1, 2-1 Southeastern Conference) won despite a season-high six turnovers, including four fumbles and two interceptions.” The Aggies will play Louisiana Tech on Oct. 13 before facing LSU on Oct. 20. Ole Miss will host Auburn.

Missouri 15, Vanderbilt 19 – The Commodores (2-3, 1-2) picked up their first SEC win of the season against still SEC-winless Missouri (3-3, 0-3). “Even more disheartening for the SEC East's newest member is that the Tigers outplayed the Commodores for much of Saturday night,” wrote David Helman on his ESPN.com SEC blog. “Missouri racked up 395 yards of offense to Vanderbilt's 295. The Tigers also won the rushing battle with 150 yards on the ground to Vanderbilt's 89 -- another indicator of success.” Missouri will likely remain winless in the SEC next week as they host top-ranked Alabama. Vanderbilt is also likely to have a rough week of SEC play as the undefeated Florida Gators come to town. 

No. 1 Alabama and Tennessee were idle this weekend.
