College Football Scores: SEC Week 7

Tide rolls, Rebels end 16-game SEC losing streak and LSU tops Gamecocks.

No. 1 Alabama (6-0) came out a little sluggish after a 38-minute rain delay, but still managed to give Missouri all it could handle and then some. According to the Bleacher Report, “The Tigers didn’t even stand a chance and the final 42-10 score isn’t indicative of how lopsided the Crimson Tide’s victory really was.”

Missouri (3-4) remains winless in the SEC and will have next week off before hosting Kentucky. Missouri is not alone in SEC woes. Tennessee (3-3) is also winless in the SEC and will likely remain so next week when the Alabama juggernaut rolls into Neyland Stadium.

No. 9 LSU 23, No. 3 South Carolina 21

Steve Spurrier was not going down without a fight. The old ball coach pushed to the very last minute, but his Gamecocks (6-1) just could not overcome the down, but certainly not out, LSU Tigers (6-1).

“It was a game with all the bang-’em-up SEC style anyone could want—two highly capable teams that may or may not be able to line up and trade blows with Alabama but clearly are deserving of their status among the top teams in the country,” wrote Steve Greenberg of the Sporting News.

The very evenly matched teams traded leads throughout the game, but in the end it was the Tigers that earned the 23-21 victory.

Both teams have major challenges ahead in the next few weeks. LSU has three consecutive games against top 25 teams -- No. 22 Texas A&M on Oct. 20, No. 1 Alabama on Nov. 3 and No. 19 Mississippi State on Nov. 10.

South Carolina travels to Gainesville to take on No. 4 Florida next week and must get by SEC opponents Tennessee and Arkansas before ending the regular season against No. 16 Clemson.

In other SEC action Saturday:

Auburn 20, Ole Miss 41 – Gene Chizik may need to start dusting off his resume. “The Tiger offense looked somewhat functional in the second quarter en route to 17 points vs. Ole Miss, but unfortunately for head coach Gene Chizik, there were three quarters to worry about,” wrote Barrett Sallee of the Bleacher Report. Though it was a bad day for Auburn, the Rebels had plenty to celebrate -- particularly end of a 16-game SEC losing streak. Up next for the Tigers is a trip to Nashville to face the Commodores. Ole Miss will be off next week.

No. 4 Florida 31, Vanderbilt 17 SB Nation College News reports, “Both offenses struggled to find consistency in this game, and neither team was very efficient on third down, including an awful 2-of-11 effort from Florida. However, the Gator defense was able to keep Vanderbilt under wraps for most of the game.” The Commodores (2-4) rallied in the fourth -- twice pulling within a touchdown -- but the Gators (6-0) held them off to seal the 31-17 win. Things get more interesting for Florida next week as they host South Carolina. The Commodores will host Auburn.

Kentucky 7, Arkansas 49 – The Wildcats (1-6) were absolutely manhandled by the Razorbacks (3-4) Saturday night. Arkansas quarterback Tyler Wilson threw for a career-high five touchdowns. Like Alabama and Missouri, Kentucky and Arkansas also dealt with weather issues. Though Bama and Mizzou were able to play a full 60 minutes, officials (perhaps mercifully) ended the Arkansas-Kentucky game with 5:08 remaining in the third, according to Yahoo Sports. The Wildcats were outgained 533-170 yards and had been shut out until the last two minutes of the game. Up next, Arkansas has a bye week and Kentucky hosts No. 14 Georgia.

Tennessee 31, No. 19 Mississippi State  41 – As the Associated Press reports, “Tennessee keeps giving nationally-ranked opponents good games. The Volunteers still haven't figured out a way to beat one.” The cowbell tolled for the Volunteers (3-3) Saturday night despite twice battling to within a field goal. MSU (6-0) hosts Middle Tennessee next week before heading to Tuscaloosa to face the No. 1 Tide -- Tennessee’s opponent for next week.

No. 22 Texas A&M  59, No. 23 Louisiana Tech 57 – With a score more reminiscent of a basketball game than a football game, the Aggies edged out Louisiana Tech (5-1) to improve to 5-1.  The two teams incredibly combined for almost 1,300 yards of total offense. The Aggies redshirt freshman quarterback Johnny Manziel had another amazing performance, accounting for six touchdowns, including three on the ground, as he rushed for 181 yards and threw for 395. “Louisiana Tech trailed by 27 points early before mounting a furious second half rally attempt capped by a 13-yard touchdown reception by Ray Holley to cut the lead to two points with 38 seconds left. But Colby Cameron's throw fell incomplete and the Aggies had the win,” the Sporting News reports. A&M hosts LSU next week.
