Former Mill Creek Baseball Player a Step Closer to Major League Play

Pitcher Brian Holmes has been drafted to the Houston Astros' minor league team.

Brian Holmes is on his way to living out his dreams in major league baseball. The former pitcher just finished his junior year at Wake Forest and was recently drafted to the Houston Astros.

“He is now officially in the minor leagues,” his mother Sherry Jennings said proudly. “So he will play through the minor leagues and hopefully make it to the major league.”

When I spoke to Jennings, her son was on his way to Troy, N.Y. to play for the Penn League.

“He will be playing for the Tri-City Valley Cats, a high level single A team,” she explained. “So, he will be working through the system. He will start out at high single A, then double A, and then hopefully the major league team, which is the Houston Astros.”

Holmes’ focus and passion for baseball is what ultimately led him to this great achievement.

“He has never loved anything more than baseball,” Jennings said. “He eats sleeps and breaths baseball. From the time he was five years old he has had a baseball in his hand tossing it up in the air and always wanting to go play catch. He has always been a really focused and passionate kid that works really hard. His coaches have always called him a 'work horse'.”

Holmes has always been a good student as well a great athlete.

“He has had to balance the higher level of academics at Wake Forest with a pretty grueling schedule in division 1 baseball,” his mother explained.

In addition making it into the major league baseball program, Holmes recently had an amazing accomplishment on the baseball fields at Wake Forest.

“He recently threw a no hitter on March 4,” Jennings said. “It was a career high with 10 strikes outs. This was only the fourth in Wake Forrest history and the first since March 27 of 2000. It was a really big deal for him and Wake Forrest. Not a single player from the other team got a hit off him.”

His accomplishments in baseball mean everything to Holmes.

“This is his dream, he has always said that he was going to play professional baseball,” Jennings said. “I have known all along that he was going to make it. I have just known it in my heart. He has had so much drive and determination to get to this point that I did not think that anything would get in his way. He is just such a great kid; I am so incredibly proud of him, and I am thrilled that he is going to live his dream.
