Mill Creek at Brookwood May Be Game to Watch

Norcross-Parkview is a Thursday night draw; Jacorey Lewis is Player of the Week; North Gwinnett, Mill Creek are impressive.

The best game of the week may be Mill Creek at Brookwood. Mill Creek, which routed Dacula last week 35-0, is one of 10 teams highlighted as unranked teams to watch by the Georgia High School Football Daily. The Hawks are obviously improved. Brookwood, 0-1 after a loss to Walton in the Corky Kell Classic, better watch out.

Other games to watch this week:

  • Buford, ranked No. 2 in Class AAA, had a tough time at No. 4 Elbert County before pulling out a 14-3 victory. Next up is Gainesville (No. 9 in Class AAAAA) in the Wolves' home opener. Looking at Buford's schedule in its new classification, a win this week could pave the way for a very do-able 10-0 record for the regular season. But, have to admit, I'm going to miss seeing the Wolves play Greater Atlanta Christian.
  • Speaking of GAC, the Spartans can be the first 3-0 team in Gwinnett with a win at Apalachee this Friday. But a win over a pretty good Class AAAAA team in Apalachee will be difficult.
  • North Gwinnett, ranked No. 4 in Class AAAAA by the Georgia Sports Writers Association/AP, is an impressive 2-0 after . Quarterback Michael Haynes completed 18 of 26 passes for 236 yards and three TDs.
  • Archer's Ernest Alexanderwho accounted for 159 yards and three TDs rushing and receiving, was named the Gwinnett Daily Post Offensive Player of the Week. Shiloh's Fred Mooringwho had four tackles for losses, was the Defensive Player of the Week.
  • If you're a high school fan, here are a couple of websites you should get to know: Georgia High School Football Historians Association, which is a great database of statistical data, and the Georgia High School Football Daily, where you can sign up for a daily newsletter full of great info.

Televised High School Football Games

I lost count of the number of televised high school football games I came across while channel-surfing during the Labor Day weekend.

It seems everyone has gotten in on the action.

Fueled by the intense fan interest in college recruiting, high-school ball has emerged from community stadiums on Friday nights to regular programming several times a week.

If you count live-streaming on the Web, it's hard not to stumble over a game being shown.

Gwinnett football has been a beneficiary of all the attention. We're barely into the season and Gwinnett teams have been featured on TV — from local stations to ESPN — at least five times.

Thursday Night Football

Two of the state's best running backs will be featured Thursday on WSB-TV's weekly telecast (Channel 2.2, WSB's second digital channel) when Parkview plays at Norcross. Both teams are 1-0.

The 7:30 p.m. game matches Alvin Kamara of Norcross and Chris Carson of Parkview. Both players have already fielded several major-college scholarship offers.

Kamara, who has more than a dozen offers, including Alabama, Georgia and USC, in last week's 35-20 win over South Gwinnett.

Carson, who has Miami among his 12 offers listed by Rivals.com, in a 3-0 win over Peachtree Ridge.

The game should also tell us a little more about each team's chances to reach the playoffs.
