Another Successful Year for Mill Creek Dance

The Mill Creek Dance Department offers students a creative fine arts elective option, and gives selected students the chance to excel in competition. This year, students in both classes and on the competitive dance team have had impressive success stories.

Dance is an elective option within the fine arts department for students at . Classes consist of ballet, jazz and modern dance. In addition to learning dance, students learn dance history, anatomy and nutrition throughout the semester. Students also perform in a fall and spring concert.

“Fine arts electives are an important part of a student’s curriculum,” Mill Creek’s director of dance Suzanne Kross said. “The dance department has 110 students in the program that take classes during the school day.”

Every year, students get the opportunity to go to an out-of-state high school dance festival. This year the MC dance department decided to submit a student choreographed piece, and it was accepted.

“Samantha Jensen choreographed a piece and submitted it for adjudication,” Kross said. “It was accepted, so we got to perform in Philadelphia. Being able to go to this festival allows students to enrich and develop their technique.”

The Mill Creek dance team is another part of the Mill Creek dance department. Students audition to be on the dance team, and go on to compete in several competitions. The dance team also has exciting news to report this year.

“The state high school dance team competition was February 18,” Kross said. “We won first in Pom and first in Jazz!”
