County to Spend $1.1 Million for Dacula-Area Traffic Monitoring

Fiber-optic cables and cameras will connect to Gwinnett's Traffic Control Center.

The Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners has awarded two contracts aimed at improving traffic flow on Gravel Springs Road and Dacula Road.

On Nov. 19, ComTran Group Inc. was awarded a $702,484 contract to install 10 cameras and 5.7 miles of fiber-optic cable to provide connectivity to nine traffic signals on Gravel Springs Road/State Route 324 between Highway 20 and Dacula Road.

A second contract, in the amount of $419,656, was also awarded to ComTran and will cover the installation of six cameras with connections to nine signals and cable along 4.5 miles of Dacula Road from Winder Highway to State Route 324/Auburn Road.

The fiber-optic cable will connect the traffic cameras and signals to the Gwinnett Traffic Control Center (TCC). The TCC monitors traffic in Gwinnett County and can adjust timing of traffic signals or address any technical issues in order to ease congestion.

Both Dacula-area projects are funded through the 2009 SPLOST program.
