The Volunteer Candidate

I believe that people who volunteer on the grassroots level are especially tuned in to what their community needs to move into the future and what the folks expect from government on any level.

I realize that my two opponents in the Dacula City Council race, Dr. Tim Montgomery and Hubert Wells have been served at least one term on the council, as opposed to myself, who has never held an public office.

When it comes to the ability to be a part of a leadership team for one's community, I feel it is only imperative that a candidate for public office have three main characteristics:

  1. The willingness to totally acquaint themselves with the issues and concerns of their community.
  2. The intelligence, determination and commitment required to weigh those facts and cast a well-studied vote.
  3. The belief, always, always, that their position is not to elevate themselves politically or to enhance their reputation, but to serve the public -- to make every attempt possible to communicate with as many residents as possible to get their thoughts on all the matters that concern our city.

As one of your three choices to fill the one contested Dacula City Council seat, I believe that I possess all three of those characteristics.

I have attended city council meetings for quite awhile now and I have always, through the years I have lived here, kept up with what is going on with my city (and county, state and country for that matter). I am familiar with the operations of the Dacula city council and believe that I have a definite contribution to make to its further success.

I also happen to believe that people like myself, who volunteer on the grassroots level throughout this nation for various causes and candidates, are especially tuned in to what their community needs to move into the future and what the folks expect from government on any level.

A friend and supporter of mine, John Wesley Noble, who is host of the online radio talk show, FairTax BlogTalk radio, likes to call me, the Volunteer Candidate. I rather like that description! It truly describes how I approach the whole idea of running for public office.

If all of our elected officials were to see their term of offices as a public service or community service stint in which they were expected to actually serve those who voted them in, I think we would have many more townspeople around the country who were more involved in their city government. There would be more interaction, less of an "us" and "them" attitude that seems to infect so many cities.

I am very proud of my town of Dacula and I appreciate and respect what the city council members do each and every day; but, I also think we can do better with regards to reaching out to residents.

If I am elected as your City Councilwoman, I promise I will make my one out of four vote count as the voice of people I would spend a lot of time talking to around town on a regular basis. And I will encourage many public forums where the main focuses are the concerns the people want addressed.

We seriously need to move past just the routine council meetings where no one shows up and the council does its business without a whole lot of public input. For the sake of Dacula's future, I do not believe that is a good course to maintain if we want our community to thrive and keep pace with other communities.

I hope you will consider me for the City Council and keep in mind that if elected, I wont be just voting to be voting. I will get public input before I vote and I will always be present to vote no matter the issue is as it is imperative that elected officials show leadership ability even when the road is a tough one. I have fought for candidates with that attitude on the grassroots level and I will keep my own in  line with those same principles!
