Why Dacula Residents Should Support a Referendum for Sunday Sales

One Dacula citizen's opinion on a Sunday Sales referendum.

On November 8, 2011, residents of the city of Dacula . That question would have to be placed on a referendum on the ballot first. The mayor and city council of Dacula are considering such a referendum.

They are asking for public input regarding that possibility. It is imperative that our city government hear from as many citizens as possible so they can make an informed decision about this Sunday sales referendum.

But why, you may ask, should there be a referendum? Giving each city or municipality the chance to make their own policy brings more governance back to the local level where I think most of it belongs. For Americans who truly value liberties, like their right to freedom of speech and that guarantee of pursuit of happiness, such a referendum gives them the ability to have a more direct say as opposed to a state or federal law which might give no consideration to the habits and personal choice of the majority of people in any one area.

Contrary to what some residents might insist, those who push for the right to have these local referendums are not only the folks who want Sunday sales. They simply want to return control of an issue that is this personal to the hands of the people. Should a town or city referendum fail to garner enough votes, then so be it -- no Sunday sales for them!

But let’s give the citizens of Dacula the same chance that the cities of Snellville, Duluth and Loganville have already decided they should give their residents -- the ability to have a voice on an issue that is such a personal one.

Of course, like any other referendum on any ballot, the turnout for the local election will be critical in determining how successful the result will be for either side of the issue. I encourage all Dacula residents to simply consider that everyone has a right to choose matters pertaining to a personal lifestyle. Supporting a local referendum to decide the question of Sunday sales will give each side a voice and will better reflect those values of individual liberty that we all hold dear.
