For Great Health ... Think Big!

This article reviews five things you need to do to get started on changing to a healthier lifestyle. If you are serious about getting fit and healthy, do your homework.

My previous article explained that many people are not successful with “health resolutions” because they haven't thought through in enough depth to be able to come up with the right objectives and plans. Here are FIVE IDEAS on things to do to get started in changing to a healthier lifestyle:

  1.  Think Bigger!  Many may make a resolution to lose 10 pounds and stop smoking.  Both of these are good things, but it might mean that you become a non-smoking, skinnier unhealthy person. We really need to think “bigger”.  What can we do to have “great health”?  No one would really decide on New Years’ day, after a night of partying, to buy a new home or a new car on impulse on January 2nd.  You need to give the same serious thought into your health.
  2. Figure out what “Great Health” looks like!  For a start, how about defining great health as having no illnesses, no aches or pains, having the strength and energy to do everything we really want to do.  Sound good?  How about also liking yourself when you look in the mirror. How about great health without medications.  You make the list.
  3. Find the “WHYS” for you.  Why would you want to have great health?  What’s in it for you?  Make sure you look at the financial savings as well.  It is far more expensive to be sick than stay healthy, even with insurance.  How about being a leader for your family.  Make a list.
  4. Do a health “SELF ASSESMENT”.  What is the state of your body?  Using your definition of Great Health, think about a scale of 1 to 10, where 10 is great health, and one is nearly dead, where are you.  If you rate yourself a 5, what is the trend?  Are you a 5 coming down from a 7 or going up from a 3?  Get motivated to make the lifestyle changes needed to obtain Great Health.
  5. Do your RESEARCH.  Before you set your objectives and make you plan, do your research.  The internet has brought health research information in the hands of anyone with a computer and internet access.  If you were buying a home you would talk with some real estate experts.  Seek out some professionals in health.  Keep an open mind because there are many “myths” regarding nutrition, exercise and other key health areas.

Well, that should be enough to get started this week.  Till next time,
