Rich History Depicted in Painting

Local artist Henry Wood did extensive research to create his rendition of an 1837 church.

Henry Wood spent more than two years creating the painting that is now on display in the lobby of Dacula United Methodist Church. The painting, a rendition of what the Pleasant Hill Methodist Church might have looked like in 1837, required extensive research of the church's history and out-of-state historic sites in an attempt to accurately portray the frontier house of worship. Despite the effort involved, Wood said he had a good time working on the painting. “I thoroughly enjoyed it,” he said. Wood said he became interested in the project after realizing there was no information about the 1837 predecessor of the Dacula United Methodist Church in the church archives. Wood said he enlisted the help of the Gwinnett County Historical Society…

The Great Escape: Magnolia's

This week escape with the girls and show your artistic side.

When trying to come up with this week’s “Great Escape” and what you need to do to prepare for it, I realized it all depends on what we are trying to escape from.  Is it an escape from the kids, from the housework that is piling up, from bills and financial issues, from the phone ringing and work calling?  Maybe you need some time alone, just to yourself, or maybe your escape would be with that special someone in your life that you don’t seem to get to spend a lot of time with lately.  For some of us an escape might even be with our children, something we can do with them and give them 100 percent of our attention while we escape from all the outside influences and pressures that come with everyday life.  I don’t know what you need to …

Talent on Display at DHS Art Show

Dacula High School hosts an event featuring student artists.

Pencil drawings and clay sculptures shared the stage with pantyhose and phone book pages as the fine arts department at Dacula High School hosted its biannual art show earlier this month.  More than 500 pieces of art by DHS students of all grades and skill levels were on display Dec. 2. Carol Arrington, one of the visual art instructors at DHS, described the event as one of her favorite times of the year. "It shows these kids what they can do to showcase their talents – where they started and where they are by the end of the semester. It gives the kids a really good sense of pride in themselves," she said. Participation in the show was mandatory for art students and counted as part of each student's final exam. Students in introductory …
