Not Many Options Available for Non Drivers to Get Around

According to the Atlanta Regional Commission, metro Atlanta receives one of the worst rankings when it comes to mobility for non-drivers. Do you think it's a problem and what improvements would you suggest?

Several local organizations, including Atlanta Regional Commission, AARP, MAVEN and AAA Traffic Safety Foundation, hosted a transportation summit this week. The subject was the needs of transportation for older adults, persons with disabilities and non-drivers in the metro Atlanta area. However, this is sometimes more of a problem in smaller communities where seniors have to rely on friends and neighbors just for trips to the grocery store or clinic. According to a press release from the ARC, it was reported that last year the Atlanta region ranked worst among large metro areas for access to transit for seniors. However, the situation has reportedly improved since then. Cited as improvements are volunteer driver programs, transportation …

Transportation for seniors unable to drive is not addressed in the Referendum. Only if the counties use the portion that is returned to them spend it on senior transportation will there be any relief for seniors. I haven't heard that Gwinnett County has any such plans.   more ›

Johnson: TSPLOST Vote ‘Once in a Lifetime’ Event

Transportation investment act will help future generations according to Norcross Mayor Bucky Johnson.

Gwinnett County citizens had the opportunity on June 20 to share their priorities for regional transportation projects during a telephone town hall meeting hosted by the Atlanta Regional Roundtable. Citizens who participated in the call were polled regarding regional transportation investment, light rail and specific local projects. Participants also had the opportunity to ask questions of Gwinnett County commission chairman Charlotte Nash and Norcross Mayor Bucky Johnson who heads the Atlanta Regional Transportation Roundtable executive committee. “This is a really important issue that we have potentially in front of us next year,” Nash said. “Those of us who sit on the regional roundtable are anxious to hear what the priorities of the …

HB277 created the TSPLOST list. There is no empansis on reducing gridlock. If they called this an Economic Development Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax, no one would vote for it, so they are lying to us by calling it a transportation tax and lying about it "untying" gridlock. HB277, Section 7 (f) tells us the true purpose. State and Federal planning funds are to be used to continue the …   more ›

Online Transportation Survey Now Available

Atlanta Regional Transportation Roundtable soliciting input regarding Transportation Investment Act.

The Atlanta Regional Transportation Roundtable is asking for the public’s help as it prioritizes a list of regional transportation projects. Between now and May 15, citizens may complete a brief survey designed to determine what the transportation priorities of the region should be. Gwinnett is part of a 10-county region that covers the metro Atlanta area. Each county and municipality within the region has submitted a list of transportation projects to the Atlanta Regional Commission for inclusion in the metro Atlanta region’s project list for the Transportation Investment Act of 2010. Several Dacula road projects and one Hamilton Mill area project were submitted for consideration. The Atlanta Regional Transportation Roundtable will review…

I took the survey. I meant to look if there was a way to see when this went active. Only having a little over 10 days to complete seems a little sneaky by the people running the survey. Hopefully this will get picked up by a lot of media outlets and a lot of people will respond to the survey. It certainly appears to be a popularity contest of sorts as to which jobs you would support and which …   more ›

Sheldon Urges Caution Regarding Regional Transit

Proposed legislation would create metro Atlanta transportation system.

Rep. Donna Sheldon (R-Dacula) is urging lawmakers to exercise caution as they consider legislation aimed at creating a regional transit system in metro Atlanta. Sheldon, chair of the Transit Governance Study Commission, commended the work of the Atlanta Regional Commission’s (ARC) Regional Transit Committee (RTC), but said the creation of a regional transit governance authority was a major undertaking that should not be rushed. “While this issue needs to be addressed quickly, it must also be done carefully and cautiously,” Sheldon said in a released statement.  “It would be premature for either the Transit Governance Study Commission or the General Assembly to move forward with the RTC’s proposal until it has been thoroughly vetted.  I …
