Retiring Dacula High School Principal Leaves Behind a Legacy of Leaders

Donnie Nutt’s career will come to an end in March, but his leadership has developed a lasting legacy.

After 34 years in the education profession, Dacula High School principal Donnie Nutt will be taking some much deserved time to relax, unwind and enjoy retirement. Nutt has been a strong and influential leader for DHS and, like many great leaders, he will leave behind a lasting legacy. April Fool’s Day will be no joke for the students and faculty of Dacula High School, it will be the first day without their beloved principal of the last 12 years. Nutt’s very last day will be March 30. “The things I am going to miss the most here at Dacula is the community in general, and the relationships we have built here,” Nutt said. “One of the things that we hang our hat on is relationship building. I will miss being with the students and the faculty …

Dacula Police Blotter

Dacula High School Students Facing Felony Drug Charges

Arrests made after suspect attempted to pass a counterfeit $100 bill at a Dacula restaurant.

Two Dacula High School students and one juvenile are facing charges after being found in possession of drugs and counterfeit money. Police were called to the Dacula Taco Bell on Dec. 9 after a male attempted to use a counterfeit $100 bill to pay for an order at the drive-thru window. The Dacula City Marshal prevented the suspect vehicle from leaving the scene by blocking the car in the drive-thru lane. Once Gwinnett County Police arrived, the driver of the suspect vehicle, later identified as 17-year-old Stephen Nelson, was ordered to pull into a parking space. In addition to Nelson, two other people were in the vehicle: 18-year-old Matthew Bielstein and a 15-year-old juvenile female.  Upon approaching the vehicle, two officers immediately…

Replay: Walton Holds Off Dacula

The Raiders tallied their lowest point total of the season but advance to the state semifinals against Lassiter.

Walton (13-0) was plagued by penalties and turnovers but downed Dacula (10-3) Friday in the quarterfinals of the Georgia High School Association's AAAAA football playoffs on Friday. We covered it live with CoverItLive and you can go back and track the conversation of a very tight contest at Raider Valley. Tyren Jones' two first-half touchdown paced the Raiders, but it was a 95-yard touchdown pass from Parker McLeod to Zach Blaylock in the fourth quarter that gave Walton its winning margin.  The win sets up another East Cobb backyard battle in the semifinals, as Walton plays host to Lassiter, which upset previously undefeated M.L. King 24-14. The Raiders and Trojans are the last two Cobb teams remaining in the playoffs, guaranteeing that a …

Dacula Football Falcons, remember that on Friday evening, November 25, 2011, there were only eight teams in AAAAA classification still playing football in the State of Georgia. You are to be commended for being one of those eight teams. You will be remembered as the only team that Walton had played thus far who showed the Raiders how to play hardnose football. Congratulations 2011 Dacula Football…   more ›

Practice Habits Lead to Awesome Friday Nights for Dacula Defensive Back

Dacula Patch athlete of the week Juanye Roberts is a defensive back who covers ground and makes tackles.

Coach Zito describes Roberts as a great person who has battled through a lot on and off the field in the last year or so of his life.    “Individually, Juanye is a very physical player who has great acceleration and explosion,” Zito said. “He is a very physical defensive back who can cover a lot of ground, but also makes good physical tackles when it is needed.” Roberts is also a very coachable player who knows what it takes to challenge himself individually and play well with his teammates.  “He has been a very selfless player …

DHS Principal Succeeds Through Focus and Caring

Donnie Nutt uses two effective words to run a successful school.

Dacula High School principal Donnie Nutt describes his school in two words: caring and focused. Nutt uses those two little words to effectively run his school supporting both teachers and students on their path to success. “My role is to be the instructional leader of the school,” Nutt said. “I am responsible for everything that is involved with the education of our students.” Nutt expects that all students can learn and perform at high levels. The teachers at Dacula High School are a key part to this expectation. “Two of my most important responsibilities are to ensure we have the best teachers in the classroom and to support those teachers to be successful,” Nutt said. He proudly leads a school where students and teachers work well …

GCPS Denies Wrongdoing in Student’s Death

Spokesperson says school personnel responded appropriately.

The family of a Dacula High School student who collapsed at school on Oct. 4 and later died has accused Gwinnett County Public Schools of failing to provide adequate care for their son. According to Gwinnett County Medical Examiner Ted Bailey, Christopher Smith, 18, died of a pulmonary embolism. A pulmonary embolism occurs when a clot travels through the body and blocks one or more arteries in the lung. Bailey said the origin of the clot is not yet known, but may have been caused by an injury Smith suffered within the past few weeks. The Atlanta Journal Constitution reports Smith’s parents, Donna Smith and Curtis Parham, said too much time elapsed before school personnel called 911 and that teachers dismissed Smith’s complaints of …

DHS Principal Donald Nutt announces death of a student.

A Dacula High School student died Tuesday after experiencing a "medical emergency" during the third period of classes, according to a letter from Dacula High School Principal Donald Nutt posted on the school's website. Teachers and school nurses immediately responded to the student, and 911 was called. The student was transported to the hospital by emergency responders. According to school district spokesman Jorge Quintana, the student was an eleventh grade boy. “A number of students were in the gym when this incident occurred, others may have seen the ambulance on campus and others may have heard about this situation. Male Athlete of the Week

Falcon Cross Country Runner Leads Team

Colby Mosshart is motivated to succeed.

Dacula High School cross country runner Colby Mosshart recently led his team at the Berry Invitational with a finish time of 17:39. This outstanding performance, and his continued motivation to improve, is what makes Mosshart this week’s Dacula Patch male athlete of the week. Coach Chad Harrison said Mosshart is a four-year letterman who has been a member of the state team since he was a freshman. “He is a hard worker who pushes himself and other runners to get better with every practice,” Harrison said. Mosshart also excels at balancing school, practice and work, Harrison added. Harrison expects 2011 to be an exciting year for both Mosshart and his teammates. “With four (four-year) seniors, we are hoping to have a good season,” Harrison …
