Patch Book Club: Spies, Lies and Betrayal in ‘The Tourist’

What have you been reading this week?

What happens when an undercover CIA agent decides to leave the past behind and live a normal life? Can things ever truly be normal after an existence in which survival depends upon your ability to lie and change your identity as easily as most people change clothes? “The Tourist” by Olen Steinhauer tells the story of Milo Weaver, a man with a mysterious past who worked for the Central Intelligence Agency as a “tourist” -- a field agent who goes from assignment to assignment relying only on information to fed to him by his handler. An assignment gone bad lands Weaver behind a desk, but his respite from a life of danger, intrigue and betrayal is only temporary. Reviewers have compared Steinhauer to John le Carré, but I’m not sure I would go …

Patch Book Club: Red Herrings Galore but Few Surprises in ‘The Lost Years’

What have you been reading this week?

I admit it. I haven't been doing much reading this week. I have been caught up in watching all four seasons of Battlestar Galactica on Netflix. What can I say? I did, however, get a little reading done. I'd love to know what you've been reading lately, so please leave a comment and tell me about the books you have read recently.  “The Lost Years” by Mary Higgins Clark – Verdict: Predictable. For a writer as popular as Clark, she must have some better books out there. This one was a disappointment. A grieving daughter, Mariah Lyons, is left to figure out who killed her father, a renowned scholar who may have discovered a priceless Biblical text before he was murdered. Was it Mariah’s Alzheimer-stricken mother or one of her father’s friends …

Dacula Patch Book Club: Lost Treasure and Lurid Romance

What have you been reading this week?

Well, the past week turned out to be a busy one for me (launching Buford Patch and all), so I didn’t get as much reading done as I normally do. The week wasn’t a total loss though. I managed to finish two books and skimmed a third (I’ll explain later). Anyway, here are my mini-reviews of what I read this week. Please let me know what you have been reading this past week -- good and bad -- by posting a comment below or sharing your thoughts in a blog. “The Emerald Storm” by William Dietrich – Verdict: Would make a fun movie. Apparently this fellow William Dietrich has been writing books for quite some time. I had never heard of him before until I spotted this book on the shelf at the Hamilton Mill Library. The book, part of a series, …

I just looked that up on Amazon and the description indicated it is reminiscent of "Arsenic and Old Lace" -- a movie I love! I'll have to check it out. Thanks for the suggestion!   more ›

Dacula Patch Book Club: Horror, Romance and Regrets in This Week’s Selections

What have you been reading this week?

Thanks to all of you who shared your book recommendations in last week’s virtual book club meeting. I haven’t been back to the library yet, but I have my Dacula Patch Book Club recommended reading list ready to go. During my last trip to the Hamilton Mill library, I checked out several new books hoping to have better luck than I did on the previous visit. Overall, I would say this week’s selections are an improvement, but given how bad the previous set was that isn’t saying much. Anyway, here are my mini-reviews of what I read this week. Please let me know what you have been reading this past week -- good and bad -- by posting a comment below or sharing your thoughts in a blog. “House of Reckoning” by John Saul - Verdict: Ambivalent. On …

That sounds interesting Rosemary! Nice mini-review! I've read a few Baldacci novels and enjoyed them. I'll have to give that one a try.   more ›

Want to Join the Dacula Patch Book Club?

Do you enjoy reading? Share your picks with other book lovers -- especially me!

Let me just say this upfront -- this book club is entirely self-serving. I have had a terrible run of luck at the library of late. Let me explain. I am often pressed for time when I go to the library, so I simply walk up and down the aisles grabbing books with interesting titles or covers. If the inside flap looks promising, I’ll check it out. Lately, this judge-a-book-by-its-cover technique has not been working so well (turns out the old adage is correct). In fact, some of the books have been so bad that I would be doing other patrons a favor if I just chucked the book in the trash rather than returning it to the library (note to any Gwinnett Library employees -- I have not chucked any of your books in the trash). My last set of book …
