A South Carolina man ended up in the Gwinnett County Jail after pills, which he claimed to have thought were vitamins, turned out to be illegal narcotics. A Gwinnett County Police officer patrolling I-85 northbound on Feb. 14 observed a Honda CRV cross out of its lane of travel and straddle the middle dividing line before crossing back into its lane. The officer initiated a traffic stop based on the violation and made contact with the driver and the passenger, later identified as John Wesley Washburn, 27, of Easley, S.C. A Sept. 22 afternoon patrol in the area of Auburn Road and Fence Road turned into a high-speed pursuit after a vehicle quickly left the scene of what initially appeared to be an accident. According to the Gwinnett County Police report, the officer was on patrol when he noticed two vehicles on Fence Road, one of which -- a tan Ford Taurus -- appeared to be blocking a white passenger vehicle. Upon spotting the patrol car, a man who had been standing near the white passenger vehicle ran back to the Taurus. The driver of the white passenger vehicle then backed up and drove around the Taurus at a high rate of speed. The white passenger vehicle turned onto Auburn Road and the tan Taurus followed. A 17-year-old Dacula man is facing charges of possession of marijuana with intent to distribute after a Feb. 8 traffic stop on I-85. Daniel Kallstrum of Dacula was a passenger in a vehicle that was stopped after a Gwinnett County Police officer noticed the driver failing to maintain lane and following too closely. According to the police report, the officer immediately noticed a strong odor of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle when he began speaking with the driver. The officer asked the driver to step out of the car and began questioning her while awaiting backup. The driver denied having any drugs in the vehicle and gave the officer permission to search the car. Before beginning the search, the officer had the rear seat passenger…
