Incumbent Don Balfour, who has served for 18 years, is the longest serving Republican in the State Senate. He is Chairman of the Senate Rules Committee and also serves on the Appropriations Committee, Education Committee, and the Health and Human Services Committee. By tomorrow night, Gwinnett County may have a new commission chairman or chairwoman. The special election to fill the unexpired portion of former Gwinnett County Chairman Charles Bannister’s term is scheduled for Tuesday, March 15. Gwinnett County voters will head to the polls tomorrow to decide which of the four candidates – Charlotte Nash, Larry Gause, Will Costa or Duane Kissel – will get the job. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. To find your polling location, visit the Georgia Secretary of State's voter information website. Two weeks from today, Gwinnett voters will elect a new chairman of the county commission. There are four candidates vying for the position as chairman. The candidates in alphabetical order by last name are: Will Costa from Lilburn, Larry Gause from Tucker, Gerald Duane Kissel from Snellville and Charlotte Nash from Dacula. This will be the only mention of these candidates in this column. Absentee voting began Feb. 14 and advance voting begins March 7. About 300 people have cast ballots at elections office during early voting period.
Early voting continues this week in the race for chair of the Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners. The special election to fill the unexpired portion of former Gwinnett County Chairman Charles Bannister’s term is scheduled for March 15. Four candidates – Charlotte Nash, Larry Gause, Will Costa and Duane Kissel – are seeking election. Absentee voting coordinator Lori Hackney said about 300 people have cast ballots so far during the early voting period. Approximately 500 absentee ballots have been mailed, Hackney added. In part three of our weeklong series, Dacula Patch asked each of the candidates for chair of the Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners if he or she supported the privatization of Briscoe Field. While some candidates support privatization and even expansion of the airport, not all candidates feel the county should relinquish control. Ceremony takes place despite severe winter storm.
It’s official. Georgia now has a new governor. The inauguration of Nathan Deal as Georgia’s 82nd governor took place shortly after 2:30 p.m. this afternoon. Though his inaugural address touched on a wide range of issues including crime, transportation and education, Deal's opening remarks focused on the economy. "In times of economic prosperity, we often ignore the cost and inconvenience of governmental paternalism," Deal said. Given the current economic conditions, the state must focus on its core responsibilities, Deal added. "I was not elected to make easy decisions, but difficult ones," he said. Despite this warning, Deal said he intended to honor the promises made to Georgia's students and vowed to save the HOPE scholarship program. …

You are so right. It is so important for our citizens to be informed. When we refuse to vote, we are part of the problem. When we vote without being informed, we are a bigger problem. It takes time and commitment to be an educated voter with a pretty good idea what the candidates stand for.   more ›
