State Jobless Rate Falls in March

Rate now stands at 9 percent.

Marking eight consecutive months of declines, the March seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 9 percent according to figures released April 19 by the Georgia Department of Labor (GDOL). The rate is the lowest since the February 2009 rate of 8.9 percent and is eight-tenths of a percentage point lower than last March's rate of 9.8 percent. “Georgia’s unemployment rate continues to trend downward,” State Labor Commissioner Mark Butler said in a released statement, “and it’s important to recognize that it’s done so as the number of people in the labor force steadily increased. This indicates a growing optimism among unemployed workers that they will be able to land a job. In fact, Georgia employers have created 35,600 jobs in the past year…

Unemployment Insurance Trust Fund in Peril

Georgia’s Unemployment Insurance Trust Fund, the fund the state uses to pay unemployment insurance claims, is broke.

By Georgia Labor Commissioner Mark Butler ATLANTA -- Georgia faces a crisis that, if ignored, has the potential to cause long-term, severe financial distress to our residents, our businesses and our stretched-thin state budget. The issue? Georgia’s Unemployment Insurance Trust Fund, the fund the state uses to pay unemployment insurance claims, is broke. But it’s not just broke, it’s in debt to the federal government, and the debt and interest are piling up. We must address this issue now or face massive interest payments to Washington. The Georgia Department of Labor had been borrowing from the federal government for years before I was sworn in as your Labor Commissioner. This borrowing continues today and is required by state law. I have …

Unemployment Rate Increases in Metro Area

Atlanta jobless rate rises to 10.5 percent in June. Gwinnett’s unemployment rate is 9.4 percent.

Preliminary numbers indicate the metro Atlanta area lost ground last month in terms of the unemployment rate. According to State Labor Commissioner Mark Butler, the unadjusted unemployment rate in metro Atlanta increased to 10.5 percent in June up from a revised May rate of 9.7 percent. The June rate is also higher than the 10.3 percent jobless rate in June of 2010. “The increase was caused primarily by two seasonal factors,” Butler said in a released statement. “There were layoffs among non-contract public school employees, such as bus drivers and janitorial workers, and an increase in the labor force, as students began looking for permanent or part-time jobs.” In Atlanta, a net loss of 4,600 jobs was recorded primarily in manufacturing, …

Georgia’s Jobless Rate Unchanged in May

Job growth continues according to the Georgia Department of Labor.

May’s unemployment numbers held steady at 9.8 percent according to figures released this week by the Georgia Department of Labor. This rate marks a slight improvement from the jobless rate of 10 percent from May 2010. “Our state’s jobless rate has been declining slightly for the past six months,” said Labor Commissioner Mark Butler. “More businesses are slowly beginning to expand their workforce, illustrating a gradual increase of confidence in the economy.” According to Butler, the number of payroll jobs increased by 3,400 with most of the jobs being in leisure and hospitality. However, Butler said, there are 28,300 fewer jobs than last year. Most of the job losses were reported in the fields of government, construction, and financial …

Georgia Department of Labor Offering Resume Help

RésuMAY part of month-long effort to help job seekers.

During May, the Georgia Department of Labor (GDOL) hopes to help job seekers improve their chances of employment by focusing on résumé-writing tools and employment-related services available at GDOL offices. “Résumé-writing assistance is one of the most popular and valuable services that Georgia’s workforce system offers,” said State Labor Commissioner Mark Butler in a released statement. “Studies have shown that an employer makes a decision about a job seeker within the first 30 seconds of looking at a résumé. That’s why a well-written résumé is critical, otherwise the applicant may not get an opportunity to interview for a job. Through RésuMAY, we’ll be able to better equip job seekers to market their skills to employers.” As part of …
