Lady Hawks Corral Mustangs, Boys Falter

Mill Creek girls use 10-0 start to big win. Foul trouble leads to defeat for boys.

After two big wins got the Lady Hawks over .500, coach Ashley Philips' team didn't waste time getting off to a fast start Tuesday against Meadowcreek. The Lady Hawks (9-7, 3-2) maintained that momentum throughout the game on their way to a 73-45 victory. The Mill Creek girls started the night with a 10-0 lead. Alicia Brookins scored the first two points of the game just 15 seconds after the jump and missed a potential 3-point play on the free throw, but super sophomore Jasmine Carter got the rebound and the put back and it was 4-0  before Meadowcreek ever touched the ball. Carter added three more baskets in quick succession to put the Lady Hawks up by 10. By the end of the first period, Mill Creek led 15-6. Meadowcreek got back into the …

This Week in Sports

This Week in Sports: Jan. 11-15

Snow forces cancellation of some events, presents new sporting opportunities.

Though this week's snow and ice storm has resulted in the cancellation of tonight's Mill Creek and Dacula basketball games, there is still plenty of sports action in store this week. 1. Winter Fun on the Slopes. With temperatures expected to remain below freezing today, there is still time to head outside and enjoy some winter sporting fun. With the icy top layer, even the slightest slope will provide a good sled run. If you missed out during Saturday's run on sleds, grab a piece of cardboard or a trash can lid and hit the slopes anyway. With near freezing temperatures predicted through Friday, the white stuff may be around for a while. If you want to prolong your winter fun, pile up some snow and create your own backyard luge (see video…

Disappointing Night for Area Basketball Teams

Mill Creek and Dacula High basketball teams were in action Friday night with only the Mill Creek girls finding a win.

BOYS BASKETBALL Dacula 50, South Gwinnett 65 The Dacula High boys' basketball team missed an opportunity to move into first place in the region when they lost to South Gwinnett Friday night.  The game was tied at the half, but a third quarter that only saw the Falcons score only five points sealed the victory for the Comets.  Dexter Walker had 15 points in the loss, and Anthony Morse and Shae Agboola rounded out the top scorers with 11 and 10 points scored respecitvely.  The loss drops Dacula's regional record to 4-2 and the overall record to 8-6.  The Falcons are back in action Tuesday night against rivals Central Gwinnett.    Mill Creek 54, Peachtree Ridge 64 Ron Wamer and Paul Evans scored 13 points each Friday night for the Mill Creek …

Lady Hawks Eliminated from Holiday Action

Mill Creek girls bounced from tournament after two straight losses.

With Tuesday's loss to the Girls Preparatory School from Chattanooga, Tenn., the Mill Creek girls' holiday hoops action came to an end. The Lady Hawks took to the court at Joe Marelle gymnasium at Duluth High School hoping to stay alive in the JumpOffPlus.com Holiday Invitational after a first round loss to Providence Day School on Dec. 27. After the opening tip, it appeared the Lady Hawks might find redemption following Monday's dismal shooting performance against Providence. With a strong physical defense, Mill Creek reached double digits while holding Girls Prep to just two points. But just as it appeared the ball was finally bouncing Mill Creek's way, things began to unravel for the Hawks. Girls Prep quickly fought its way back into …

Lady Falcons Fall in Tournament Opener

Host North Gwinnett proves too powerful for Dacula girls.

The Dacula High School girls' basketball team hit the hardwood for the first round of the Jared Cook Holiday Classic on Tuesday at North Gwinnett High School. Unfortunately for the Lady Falcons, their performance against the host Bulldogs was one they may want to forget. From the beginning, Dacula was outplayed in every aspect of the game as North Gwinnett took control and began draining shots repeatedly. Throughout the first quarter, the Lady Falcons were out-hustled by North Gwinnett and unable to catch up in transition. "They have a bit bigger size than us," head coach Travis Young said. "But, I think we came at them pretty well. They're a really good team so any mistake you make, they will capitalize on it." The Falcons were led …

Lady Hawks Fall in Tournament Action

Mill Creek loses first round game to Providence at JumpOffPlus.com Invitational.

Though the Mill Creek High School girl's basketball team essentially had home court advantage in the first round of the JumpOffPlus.com Holiday Invitational, they never seemed quite comfortable on the court. Though playing in the familiar venue of Duluth High School, the Lady Hawks  struggled against Providence Day School from Charlotte, N.C. Mill Creek built momentum early in the game after a three-pointer from the corner by Tamarr Williams gave the Lady Hawks a spark. Despite some sloppiness on the offensive end, Mill Creek ended the first quarter up 11-7. Providence came out after the short break and put the clamps on Mill Creek's offensive attack. The Chargers went on a 13–0 run and would not relinquish the lead for the remainder of…

Falcons Hit Hardwood for Holiday Hoops

Dacula boys head to Daytona, while the girls will play at North Gwinnett.

The boys will head to Florida for the Daytona Beach Sunshine Classic, while the Lady Falcons will stay close to home as they compete in the Jared Cook Holiday Classic at North Gwinnett High School. For the boys, the trip south will pit them against eight other teams, including two international squads – Santa Maria Academy from Puerto Rico and Sunland Baptist Academy from the Bahamas. The Falcons have had some ups and downs this season, especially on offense, but, with its strong defense, Dacula hopes to make a good showing. "Defense has kept us in a lot of games," sophomore Brandon Goodson …
