A Dacula man took steps to prevent the theft of his valuables while working out at a local gym, but the measures proved inadequate. According to the Gwinnett County Police report, the man went to Gold’s Gym on the afternoon of Jan. 1 and secured his wallet in a locker at approximately 3:30 p.m. When he returned to his locket at 5 p.m., the wallet was gone. The man told police he had a lock on the locker and did not know how the suspect managed to open it. The thief or thieves attempted to use the man’s debit card at Chevron and Kroger, but neither transaction went through. In addition to the debit card, the wallet also contained the man’s driver’s license, a $25 gift card and approximately $300 in cash. The case is listed as active. In …

Gwinnett County Police are investigating two recent thefts at Gold’s Gym in Dacula. On Dec. 4, a patron of the gym reported his wallet stolen. According to the police report, the Auburn man left the wallet in an unsecured locker while he was working out in the gym. When he returned to the locker, the wallet was gone. The wallet contained the man’s driver’s license, Social Security card and a debit card. The debit card, the man said, was used shortly after the theft to make a $7.62 purchase at the Ingles on Auburn Road. The man advised the card had since been cancelled and no other fraudulent activity had taken place. On Dec. 9, another Gold’s Gym patron reported a theft. An Aug. 30 workout out at Gold’s Gym in Dacula proved costly for an Auburn man. The man told police he left his wallet and cell phone on a cubby shelf while he worked out at the gym. When he returned to collect his belongings, the items were missing. The man said his wallet contained his driver’s license, two credit cards and a debit card. The phone -- a Blackberry -- had a listed value of $200. According to the police report, the area of the gym in which the theft occurred is covered by video surveillance. The officer was unable to review the surveillance footage at the time of the report because no staff members on duty at the time had access to the system. The case is listed as active. A Dacula man’s July 3 workout ended on an unpleasant note when he realized his cell phone had been stolen. The victim told police he placed his gym bag in a locker prior to working out at Gold’s Gym. When he returned to his locker, the gym bag was gone. The police incident report did not indicate if the locker had been locked. The victim searched the locker room and eventually found his gym bag in a toilet stall. His cell phone, a Sprint HTC EVO valued at $500, was missing. Sprint traced the phone to a Lawrenceville address. The officer went to the address, but no one answered the door. The case is listed as active. Bag was taken while 16-year-old Auburn teen was working out at Gold’s Gym.
A 16-year-old Auburn teen lost several hundred dollars worth of personal belongings during a Jan. 5 workout at Gold’s Gym in Dacula. The teen said his gym bag, which contained his car keys, house keys, iPhone and school uniform, was taken out of a cubbyhole on the gym floor. At the time of the incident, Gold’s Gym did not have any security cameras directed at the gym floor, but that is no longer the case. According to general manager Joan Ferrante, a camera in the lobby has been repositioned so that it is directed at the cubbyholes. Gold’s previously did not have cameras pointed at the gym floor in order to protect the privacy of its members, Ferrante explained. It is a scenario that has played out repeatedly over the past few months. A victim, usually a female, leaves her purse in the car while she works out or enjoys a local park. When the victim returns to the vehicle, she finds her window smashed and the purse gone. On Nov. 3, a Dacula woman became the latest victim of this crime. According to the police report, the woman left her purse in her vehicle around 5:30 p.m. while she worked out at Gold’s Gym. When she returned to her car two hours later, she discovered that her front passenger side window had been smashed and her Coach purse was missing. Gwinnett County Police are investigating another daytime car break-in in the parking lot of Gold’s Gym. The latest incident occurred between 4 p.m. and 4:50 p.m. on Aug. 26. According to the police report, the thief or thieves smashed the rear passenger window of the victim’s black Hummer and took the victim’s purse. The purse contained money, credit cards, the victim’s social security card and her driver’s license. There were no witnesses. Gold’s Gym has been the site of several car break-ins over the past few months. In early August, Gold’s announced several security measures intended to prevent further incidents. After a string of car break-ins in the Gold's Gym parking lot, manager Joan Ferrante said her company is taking steps to prevent future occurrences. “Hopefully by highlighting this problem we can help combat it,” Ferrante said in an emailed statement. “We take this matter very seriously and have taken a number of extra measures to prevent further break ins, and help capture the thieves.” According to Ferrante, Gold’s has implemented the following measures to help protect gym members: Ferrante pointed out that during the last break-in, a member was able to give a description of the suspect’s vehicle. Another daytime car break-in was reported last week at Gold’s Gym in Dacula. The break-in is the latest in a series of incidents in which the thief or thieves have smashed car windows in order to gain access to the interior of the vehicles. On the morning of July 19, a Hoschton woman was walking across the parking lot of Gold’s Gym when she heard the sound of glass breaking. When the woman turned in the direction of the noise, she saw a black male with short hair reaching inside a white Toyota Camry. According to the witness, the suspect looked up and saw her looking at him. At that point, the male got into a black four-door Chevrolet parked directly behind the Camry and drove away. Gwinnett County Police are investigating two new cases of entering auto reported at Gold’s Gym on Auburn Road. On June 23, a thief or thieves smashed the windows of two cars in order to gain access to the interior. Both incidents occurred between 9:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. In one case, the front passenger window of a gold Ford Expedition was broken. No items were taken according to the victim. In the second break-in, the back passenger window of a Toyota 4-Runner was smashed. The victim said a wallet containing her credit cards, driver’s license and cash was taken.
