A Kentucky boy accidentally shot his 2-year-old sister to death with a gun he got for his birthday.
Two-year-old Caroline Sparks loved playing outside, singing, and her 5-year-old brother, who accidentally shot her to death last week with the .22-caliber rifle he got for his birthday. CNN reports the children's mother had stepped outside for just a few minutes when the accident occurred. It was the third time in about a month that someone was shot to death by a child under 6. The boy's gun was a Crickett rifle marketed specifically for young children as "my first rifle," the CNN story said. The gun stocks come in colors such as pink and blue. A group of concerned citizens stood with signs outside the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center in Lawrenceville Thursday to call for support of reasonable gun safety laws. The rally took place a little more than two months after the Dec. 14, 2012, shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. Twenty-six people, mostly young children, lost their lives when a gunman opened fire in the school. MoveOn.org sponsored the event urging U.S. Rep. Facility to be located near the intersection of Braselton Highway and Old Peachtree Road.
In just a few months, area residents will have a new place to hone their firearm skills. Verne Fowler said he expects his Georgia Gun Club to open in mid- to late July. Gwinnett County recently issued the development permit for the club, which will be located at 1951 Braselton Highway. The 4.06-acre recreational facility near the intersection of Braselton Highway and Old Peachtree Road will include a 37,300-square-foot, two-story building featuring 28 indoor lanes -- eight tactical, 12 small arms and eight 100-yard rifle lanes. The gun control debate that heated up earlier this month when President Obama proposed a series of gun-control measures led to a large turnout Jan. 26 at a gun show in Lawrenceville. According to myfoxatlanta.com, the line at the Gwinnett County Fairgrounds wrapped around the complex just to get inside. Gwinnett County Sheriff Butch Conway has released a statement in support of citizens' right to legally use firearms. "I encourage all law abiding citizens to acquire and maintain the skills to safely carry a firearm in order to protect themselves and others," the statement reads. Conway issued the statement under the heading "The 2nd Amendment." The U.S Constitution's Second Amendment says, "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." A metro area gun safety seminar is expected to draw a record crowd. The Marietta Police Department seminar on Thursday, Jan. 24, has had an overwhelming amount of public interest. As of Wednesday, almost 700 people had registered to attend the event at the Marietta Middle School Auditorium, 121 Winn St., at 6:30 p.m. The department usually hosts two or three firearms safety seminars each year. On average there are 100 people in attendance. “This program has been developed to educate the citizens on current firearm laws and weapon safety. Americans nationwide are being urged to show their support for gun ownership by visiting gun stores, ranges and shows on Saturday, Jan. 19 -- a day designated as "Gun Appreciation Day" by a coalition of gun rights and conservative groups. Thieves smashed front door glass to gain access to the store.
DACULA, GA -- Just hours after a large shipment of weapons arrived at a local gun store, burglars struck the shop and stole numerous handguns, tactical rifles and shotguns. According to business owner David Duncan, Big Gun Armory received two large deliveries on Friday afternoon. Duncan said the 65 guns were immediately placed on display since store inventory had been heavily depleted due to increased sales related to the election, the Connecticut shootings and holiday shopping.
