GCPS to Cut Jobs, Increase Class Sizes

Moves part of an effort to address an $89 million budget shortfall.

Gwinnett County Public Schools will eliminate 54 vacant central-office positions and release some other employees as it copes with an $89 million revenue shortfall for fiscal year 2013. “Not a single option we are considering to balance next year’s budget is a ‘good’ one," said GCPS Superintendent J. Alvin Wilbanks in a released statement. "That said, in these difficult budget times, we are committed to presenting a balanced budget, doing everything possible to protect instructional time, valuing our employees, and implementing cost-saving measures wherever feasible.” GCPS attributes the shortfall to a variety of factors including: To address the shortfall, GCPS plans include: The school system does not plan to reduce employees' salaries …

The way cuts were made concerning salaries was the displacement process. X amount of people retired, or left for whatever reasons. Schools eliminated positions and those left without a job were shuffled around to fill the vacant ones. I know. I was displaced a year ago and filled a vacant spot. In other circumstances, they eliminated a position and simply went without it. Now, I'm watching it (…   more ›

Volunteer Group Drumming up Support for E-SPLOST

"Gwinnett Kids Count" encouraging voters to support the penny sales tax for education.

A committee of private citizens is trying to get the word out about the Nov. 8 education special purpose local option sales tax (E-SPLOST) referendum. Gwinnett Kids Count, a campaign by the 2012 Education SPLOST Renewal Committee, is designed to educate voters regarding the benefits of the penny sales tax for education. Mike Levengood, committee co-chair, said his group organized a live phone call campaign targeting likely voters in an attempt to generate support for the E-SPLOST. Levengood emphasized the effort is not funded by the school system. “It is all paid for by donations from private citizens who care about keeping our schools above par,” he said. According to the Gwinnett Kids Count website, a yes vote for E-SPLOST will: Have you…

Lifesaving AEDs Are Standard Equipment in Gwinnett Schools

Although Georgia law only mandates that all high schools carry automatic external defibrillators, all public schools in Gwinnett have AEDs on campus.

News channels are featuring a video of a Texas seventh grader who was saved by teachers in a middle school after she went into cardiac arrest and collapsed. The teachers immediately started CPR, but it was only when they used an automatic external defibrillator (AED) that they were able to get her heart beating again.  The teachers are being recognized as saving the life of 12-year-old Kylee Shea of Frisco, Texas. If not for their actions, there was only a 3 percent chance of the student surviving and a 1 percent chance she would have recovered without some permanent brain damage. While AEDs are recognized as a valuable life saving device, Georgia law only mandates they be installed at all high schools in the state. Gwinnett county, …

E-SPLOST and What It Means for Dacula Area Schools

Voters will decide on Nov. 8 whether to continue the current 1 percent E-SPLOST for another five years.

The E-SPLOST, or educational special purpose local option sales tax, is a 1-percent sales tax on all retail sales in Gwinnett County. Anyone who makes a purchase in Gwinnett County contributes to our local schools through this tax. The Gwinnett County Public School system has benefited from E-SPLOST since the mid 1990s. Proceeds from this tax have provided GCPS students with classrooms in 46 new schools and 59 school additions as well as technology upgrades within the schools.   The current E-SPLOST will expire on June 30, 2012. This November, voters will be asked to approve an extension of the E-SPLOST, known as SPLOST IV, for another five years. This would not be a new or additional tax, but rather a continuation of the current E-SPLOST…

R, it is very believable that it may be a PTA group, as when this self tax began we DID INDEED make calls to inform our parents about the vote. So it makes sense that your number could have come from a school list. If concerned ask you principal how your private number was used in this instance. I normally get called on these things but we have done away with my home phone for this very reason.   more ›
