Costa Goes Back to Family and Pasta

After last-place finish in Gwinnett Chairman's race, Lilburn Libertarian says he doesn't expect to run for office "anytime soon."

The day after finishing last in the four-person race for the Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners chair, Will Costa was selling pasta Wednesday. The Lilburn Libertarian, who drew just 8.85 percent of the vote in Tuesday’s special election won by Charlotte Nash, was in the office at Costa’s Pasta, the family business in Cobb County, looking forward to the upcoming farmer’s market season. “I’m going to go out there and sell some pasta,” Costa said, referring to weekend farmer’s markets, such as in Lilburn and Snellville, which will fill his calendar this spring and summer. “I’d rather talk about pasta than politics. … I’ve been making pasta for almost 30 years.” Costa, 42, said it was time to focus on business and family — he and his wife …

Nash Wins Special Election

Dacula native to take the helm as chair of the Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners.

Easily avoiding a runoff with 56 percent of the vote, Charlotte Nash will soon begin her new job as head of Gwinnett County's government. The Dacula native celebrated her win with friends and family at Stars and Strikes in Dacula. Dozens of supporters gathered Tuesday evening to await the results of the March 15 special election. Though she maintained a comfortable lead throughout the evening, Nash waited until almost all the results were in to claim victory. After thanking her supporters and her husband Mike, Nash made a promise to those in attendance. “I’m not going to commit to never doing anything you disagree with,” she said. “But I will commit to do the very best job I can.” Dacula Mayor Jimmy Wilbanks believes that Nash will be a …

Special Election Results: Nash Wins

No runoff as Nash secures 56 percent of the vote.

UPDATED MARCH 16. Voters went to the polls March 15 to decide which candidate -  Charlotte Nash, Larry Gause, Will Costa or Duane Kissel - will fill the unexpired portion of former Gwinnett County Chairman Charles Bannister’s term. With 156 of 156 precincts reporting, unofficial totals show Charlotte Nash with 56 percent of the vote. The totals are as follows: Charlotte Nash - 9120 (55.99%) Duane Kissel - 1533 (8.92%) Will Costa - 1528 (8.85%) Larry Gause - 4363 (26.06%) Out of 384,172 registered Gwinnett County voters, only 19,118 or 4.98 percent voted in the election.

Advanced voting will be held March 7-11 at the Gwinnett County Elections Office, 455 Grayson Highway, Suite 200, Lawrenceville. Polls will be open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. On March 15, voters will cast ballots at their assigned precinct. A runoff, if necessary, will be held April 12. Early voting continues this week in the race for chair of the Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners. The special election to fill the unexpired portion of former Gwinnett County Chairman Charles Bannister’s term is scheduled for March 15. Four candidates – Charlotte Nash, Larry Gause, Will Costa and Duane Kissel – are seeking election. Absentee voting coordinator Lori Hackney said about 300 people have cast ballots so far during the early voting period. Approximately 500 absentee ballots have been mailed, Hackney added. Early voting began Feb. 14 and continues this week at the Gwinnett County Elections Office, 455 Grayson Highway, Suite 200, Lawrenceville. Local Tea Party Group Issues Statement

Chairman and founder says Gwinnett group has not endorsed Costa.

A recent Tea Party award has created some confusion in the local political scene according to Steve Ramey, chairman and founder of The Founding Fathers Tea Party Patriots. Last week, a Facebook post by the Libertarian Party of Georgia, indicated Gwinnett County commission chair candidate Will Costa had been awarded the George Washington Honesty in Government Award by the State of Georgia Tea Party LLC. In the release, the award is described as one “given to candidates that best embrace an understanding of our Founding Father principles of limited and honest government.” Ramey said the use of the words “Founding Father principles” could lead some to believe his group has endorsed Costa. “The Founding Fathers Tea Party Patriots wanted to …

Airport Top Concern for Forum Attendees

Candidates asked multiple questions relating to the privatization and expansion of Briscoe Field.

If the candidates for chair of the Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners had any doubts about the importance of the airport to the voting public, those doubts were erased at Tuesday night’s forum. More than 125 people gathered at The Bridge Community Church in Buford for the Feb. 15 candidate forum sponsored by the Alliance of Concerned Citizens of Old Peachtree (ACCOP). After making their opening speeches, the candidates were asked questions submitted by audience members.
