In an effort to address a controversial issue with a single, stronger voice, organizers of three groups opposed to the controversial I-85 toll lanes have joined forces to create StolenLanes.org. Victor A. Ramkisson of Against The Peach Pass, Howard Rodgers of Stop the HOT Lane! and Chris K. Haley of Stop Peach Pass hope to solidify the community’s opposition to the HOT (High Occupancy Toll) lanes. According to StolenLanes.org, nearly 10,000 people have rallied behind the cause. UPDATED OCT. 14 AT 5:35 A.M. A Gwinnett County man is hoping a petition drive will fix some of the commuter problems the I-85 high occupancy toll (HOT) lanes have caused since they went into effect Oct. 1. Howard Rodgers plans to petition officials to stop HOT lane operations completely until a better solution is reached. After commuters voiced their displeasure over the new HOT lanes, Gov. Nathan Deal lowered the toll rates in an effort to increase lane usage. Deal also has asked the U.S. Department of Transportation to grant a waiver, reducing the number of passengers in a vehicle to qualify for a free ride in the express lane from three to two. As part of the conversion of the existing High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes on I-85 to High Occupancy Toll (HOT) lanes, the Georgia Department of Transportation is planning both day and night time lane closures. Daytime work is expected to take place in the following locations in the northbound lanes from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and the southbound lanes from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.: No other daytime road work is scheduled this week. During the overnight hours, southbound closures will begin at 8 p.m. and continue to 5 a.m. Overnight lane closures may occur at the following locations: Next weekend, southbound closures will begin at 8 p.m. and continue to 7 a.m. on I-85 south and on SR 316 west only, closing the left or HOV lane.
