City received 10 bids, all of which were over budget.
City officials are working with engineers to revise plans for Dacula’s new maintenance facility after all 10 bids for the project came in over budget. The city hopes to spend approximately $750,000 for the new facility. However, bids ranged from a low of $1.034 million to a high of $1.315 million. According to City Administrator Jim Osborn, those amounts exceed what is available in SPLOST funding. “They were very close, very competitive. Unfortunately, they’re all over budget,” Osborn said. As a result, some of the features initially planned for the new facility are being eliminated. “We’re pretty close to getting it down to a more manageable $700,000, $750,000 -- somewhere in that range -- and that’ll give us a little leeway,” Osborn said…

Poor soil results in complications for road project.
A project to repave and repair a roughly half-mile stretch of Williams Farm Drive will cost the City of Dacula more than expected. Last month, the city awarded an $184,760 contract to Allied Paving for the project, which covers 2,170 linear feet of roadway from the area of 3100 Williams Farm Drive to the end of the cul-de-sac. The problem, according to Dacula City Administrator Jim Osborn, is sub-grade soil in such poor condition that it is unsuitable for proper compaction. Once crews began work, they discovered sandy, loamy material -- a mixture of sand, topsoil and organic matter. “We think it was partially used for a trash pit,” Osborn said. In order to create a suitable base upon which to lay asphalt, crews must excavate the roadway to…

Whelan Company working to complete projects in tornado ravaged areas first.
The City of Dacula’s tornado siren should be repaired within the next two to three weeks according to Dacula City Administrator Jim Osborn. At Thursday night’s city council work session, Osborn said the company contracted to handle the repairs, Whelan, has been busy working in tornado-ravaged parts of Alabama and northwest Georgia. The company has several projects to complete before it turns its attention to repairing Dacula’s siren. “It’s on their to-do list,” Osborn said. The repairs, which are expected to cost $6,100, will be completed in one day once the Whelan crew arrives. Osborn also gave council members an update on two pending construction projects. The first, the Williams Farm Drive asphalt base reclamation and replacement, will …

Estimated cost to repair system is $6,100.
Next week, the Dacula City Council will decide whether to move forward with repairs to the city’s aging tornado warning siren. Council members discussed several options during the May 26 work session including repairs, replacement and promoting the use of weather radios. Repairs to the existing Whelan system are expected to cost approximately $6,100. According to city administrator Jim Osborn, the repairs would take one day and would be handled by the nearest authorized service repair company which is based in Anniston, Ala. Osborn said it would cost $15,000 to fully modernize and replace the system. The cost for both the repairs or replacement would be taken from reserve funds. Though the city can apply for a grant from the Georgia …
