Kroger Customers Donate $231K During USO 'Round-Up' Campaign

Stores throughout the metro Atlanta area participated in the annual fundraiser.

UPDATED: July 12 at 11:35 a.m. Atlanta area Kroger customers donated more than $231,000 -- $31,000 more than the goal of $200,000 -- during this year's United Service Organization (USO) "Round-Up" campaign. Dacula Kroger manager Rex Thayer believes in putting others first.

Name: Rex Thayer Occupation: Dacula Kroger Store Manager How did you get started in your occupation? I have been in the grocery business for a long time -- 34 years. Dacula Leaders Considering Sunday Sales Vote

Council may place Sunday sales and Sunday liquor by the drink on November ballot.

Later this year, Dacula citizens may have the chance to decide whether to allow Sunday retail sales of alcohol. Voters may also get to choose whether to allow Sunday sales of liquor by the drink within the city limits. Now that SB 10 has been signed into law, local governments statewide may hold referendums on whether or not to permit Sunday sales of alcohol in grocery and liquor stores. Dacula Mayor Jimmy Wilbanks said local retailers, such as the city’s new 94,000-square-foot Kroger, could be at a disadvantage if county residents vote to allow Sunday sales and Dacula does not. Restaurants within the city limits are already at a disadvantage when it comes to Sunday sales of liquor by the drink. While the county allows such sales, the City…

I definitely think that the people should be allowed to vote on this as early as possible. I understand that some people's religious views are against the purchase alcohol on Sundays but why should that prohibit everyone from doing it? If you don't believe in purchasing alcohol on Sundays DON'T.   more ›

Dealing with Life's Detours

How to react when life doesn't quite go as planned.

This past week I was driving on Harbins Road heading to the post office when I ran into an unusually bad traffic jam.  I was baffled as to what was causing such a mess.  It was the middle of the day so I knew the high school wasn’t out.  It wasn’t Sunday so it wasn’t Hebron traffic, and the new Kroger still hadn’t opened yet so it couldn’t be that either.  Slowly we crept forward until I noticed the cause of all the problems. apparently there was some road work being done on Harbins Road and thus the workers were detouring people down a side street.  Slowly each car drove up to the man holding the stop sign and then veered off to the left down the designated detour route.  Everyone was moving right along, until the guy in front of me …
