Kroger stores throughout the Atlanta area are participating in a school supply drive through July 28. The 18th annual "Back 2 School" campaign is made possible through a partnership between 125 Kroger stores, the Children’s Restoration Network and WSB-TV. According to a Kroger press release, the Children’s Restoration Network works with thousands of homeless children each year. “Children’s Restoration Network provides hope and support to families in our community as they work toward ending the cycle of homelessness,” said Glynn Jenkins, director of communications and public relations for Kroger’s Atlanta Division, in a released statement. “We encourage our customers to participate in the ‘Back 2 School’ drive and help provide Atlanta’s …

UPDATED: July 12 at 11:35 a.m. Atlanta area Kroger customers donated more than $231,000 -- $31,000 more than the goal of $200,000 -- during this year's United Service Organization (USO) "Round-Up" campaign. Customers donated money by rounding up purchases made between June 24 and July 7 to the nearest dollar. The difference between the purchase price and the rounded up dollar amount will go to benefit the USO, an organization that provides support to U.S. servicemen and women and their families. “Kroger’s ‘Round-Up’ benefitting the USO is a favorite among our customers and associates,” said Glynn Jenkins, director of communications and public relations for Kroger’s Atlanta Division, in a released statement. “We are extremely grateful for …

Kroger will also provide postcards at each register which customers can use to write messages of encouragement. Dacula Kroger manager Rex Thayer believes in putting others first.
Name: Rex Thayer Occupation: Dacula Kroger Store Manager How did you get started in your occupation? I have been in the grocery business for a long time -- 34 years. I have worked every position in a grocery store and just worked my way up through the ranks. This Kroger is my sixth store as manager, and I’ve been fortunate enough to have opened three new Kroger stores in my career. It’s a great thrill and accomplishment for me to start from the ground up. What is the most rewarding aspect of what you do? I like interacting with people and meeting new people. Council may place Sunday sales and Sunday liquor by the drink on November ballot.
Later this year, Dacula citizens may have the chance to decide whether to allow Sunday retail sales of alcohol. Voters may also get to choose whether to allow Sunday sales of liquor by the drink within the city limits. Now that SB 10 has been signed into law, local governments statewide may hold referendums on whether or not to permit Sunday sales of alcohol in grocery and liquor stores. Dacula Mayor Jimmy Wilbanks said local retailers, such as the city’s new 94,000-square-foot Kroger, could be at a disadvantage if county residents vote to allow Sunday sales and Dacula does not. Restaurants within the city limits are already at a disadvantage when it comes to Sunday sales of liquor by the drink. While the county allows such sales, the City…

How to react when life doesn't quite go as planned.
This past week I was driving on Harbins Road heading to the post office when I ran into an unusually bad traffic jam. I was baffled as to what was causing such a mess. It was the middle of the day so I knew the high school wasn’t out. It wasn’t Sunday so it wasn’t Hebron traffic, and the new Kroger still hadn’t opened yet so it couldn’t be that either. Slowly we crept forward until I noticed the cause of all the problems. apparently there was some road work being done on Harbins Road and thus the workers were detouring people down a side street. Slowly each car drove up to the man holding the stop sign and then veered off to the left down the designated detour route. Everyone was moving right along, until the guy in front of me …
