Three individuals had applied to be the city's licensee.
By a 3-1 vote, the Dacula City Council awarded the city's first, and currently the only, liquor license to applicant Heather Weaver during a Jan. 31 called meeting. Councilman Gregory Reeves voted in opposition. Weaver, along with husband Russ, was behind the successful petition drive which led to the package store referendum. Their store, Dacula Cork and Bottle, will be located near the intersection of Hurricane Shoals and Old Peachtree Road. Russ Weaver will be the manager and involved in the day to day operation of the store. The Weavers expect to open for business in October 2013. Proposed store locations are on Winder Highway, Hurricane Shoals Road and Old Peachtree Road.
The application deadline for those interested in being the city's first, and for now only, liquor store licensee has passed. The fact the application was comprehensive and required a great deal of work to complete may have deterred some potential applicants, Wilbanks explained. Part of the process required applicants to specify where exactly they plan to build a store. According to Wilbanks, the proposed locations are as follows: On Jan. 30 beginning at 5 p.m., the …

Heather Weaver hopes to be the first liquor store licensee in Dacula.
In 2012, Russ and Heather Weaver set out to convince Dacula voters of the benefits a package store might provide for the city. The Weavers launched a petition drive and, after months of going door to door, collected enough signatures to allow the question of whether a not Dacula should allow liquor stores to go before the voters. The voters said yes by an overwhelming 181 to 76 margin. As a result, the city amended its alcohol ordinance and is now in the process of accepting applications from those interested in becoming the city's first, and for now only, liquor store licensee. Heather Weaver is one of those interested parties. Watch the video for details about Weaver's background and business aspirations. You might also be interested in …

I am disappointed that the location is so close to schools, churches, and residential areas. The location on Winder seems much better suited for this type of business. Maybe that area wouldn't generate as much in taxes.   more ›
