Three Questions With the Mayor: Xpress Bus Ridership, Dacula Census Stats and Dream Vacation Destination

Dacula Mayor Jimmy Wilbanks answers questions about our community.

In this week's "Three Questions With the Mayor," Dacula Mayor Jimmy Wilbanks provides an update on the latest city news and divulges what places he would most like to visit. Dacula Patch: What's new in Dacula this week? Mayor Wilbanks: I noticed that the Xpress Bus Park and Ride is accommodating nearly five times as many riders on the Xpress buses to downtown than when it started several months ago. I also noticed cars from Barrow County, Fulton County, DeKalb County, Walton County, Habersham County as well as from Gwinnett County. I guess some of these folks have moved into our county but haven’t yet replaced their auto registrations, or it could mean that this transportation resource is a regional resource. Use seems to be steadily …

We always welcome new businesses and appreciate the owners’ willingness to invest their time and finances in Dacula. If you want a nice ice cream or hot dog, please patronize Heavenly Desserts. I'm with you on that. Plus, just look at UGA's schedule compared to some of the other SEC teams. It should be a cakewalk, but that's not necessarily indicative of a great team -- just an easy schedule. As for USC, I am still shaking my head over that and am frankly more than a little bit offended they were ranked ahead of BAMA. RTR!   more ›

Three Questions With the Mayor: Aug. 13 Edition

Dacula Mayor Jimmy Wilbanks answers questions about our community.

Interested in learning more about Dacula? In this week's "Three Questions With the Mayor," Dacula Mayor Jimmy Wilbanks provides an update on the latest city news and shares information about our community's history. Dacula Patch: What's new in Dacula this week? Mayor Wilbanks: The Dacula Maintenance Building contract for construction has been awarded to Hamby Construction Company, a Gwinnett County headquartered company. Hamby is the low bidder, and the company built our City Hall. Even better, the award embraces Dacula’s desire to award contracts to local companies while following our bid-process procedure. Hamby has 160 days to complete the project from the date of the notice to proceed. Dacula Patch: What is something Dacula residents …

Naming Dacula's Downtown Park

Dacula Mayor Jimmy Wilbanks explains the history of the location of the new downtown park.

This article was originally posted on the City of Dacula website and is reposted with permission from Mayor Jimmy Wilbanks. In determining the historic background of the new downtown park site, I wanted to share some information about the location the City Council will soon be naming. Early in the history of this tract of land, the Dacula Milling Company occupied what I guess was the first set of buildings on this property. No pictures exist (to my knowledge). So what we know is that there was a business that milled wheat into flour and corn into corn meal. An article from 1903 mentions that the Dacula Milling Company’s flour and corn meal was “the equal of the northern mills.” And the article noted that the owner(s) operated a ginnery and…

Dacula Council Members to Be Sworn in Jan. 5

Mayor Jimmy Wilbanks also scheduled to give stormwater address.

Two Dacula council members are scheduled to be sworn in during Thursday's night city council meeting. Sue Robinson, who was unopposed during the election, will take her oath of office as will councilman-elect Hubert Wells. Wells was one of two people to challenge incumbent Tim Montgomery this year. Wells and Montgomery were forced into a runoff when neither candidate secured enough votes to win the Nov. 8 election outright. Wells, a former Dacula councilman and mayoral candidate, won the runoff by a 74-61 margin. Other items on Thursday night's agenda include:
