New 'Trek' Features Eye-Popping Action, Humor and Graceful Character Touches

As he did with 2009's "Star Trek", J.J. Abrams has crafted a film that will appeal to casual popcorn-flick fans while still respecting hard-core Trekkies.

With "Star Trek Into Darkness", director J.J. Abrams proves his first "Trek" outing in 2009 was no fluke, completing the resuscitation of Paramount's once-ailing flagship franchise and setting the scene for what one can only hope will be many more adventures with this winning cast. As he did with 2009's "Star Trek", Abrams has crafted a film that will appeal to casual popcorn-flick fans while still respecting hard-core Trekkies. "Into Darkness" begins at mid-gallop and only rarely slows through its 132-minute running time. The movie opens with the Enterprise crew working frantically to save an alien world from certain doom, in the form of an impending volcanic eruption. A monkey wrench gets thrown into the works when first officer Spock (…

Movie Review: 'Great Gatsby' an 'Audacious and Worthy Attempt'

Critics describe the adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel as "frenzied," "audacious" and "relentlessly entertaining."

The premise, courtesy of the film's official website: “The Great Gatsby” follows Fitzgerald-like, would-be writer Nick Carraway (Tobey Maguire) as he leaves the Midwest and comes to New York City in the spring of 1922, an era of loosening morals, glittering jazz and bootleg kings. Chasing his own American Dream, Nick lands next door to a mysterious, party-giving millionaire, Jay Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio), and across the bay from his cousin, Daisy (Carey Mulligan), and her philandering, blue-blooded husband, Tom Buchanan (Joel Edgerton). It is thus that Nick is drawn into the captivating world of the super-rich, their illusions, loves and deceits. As Nick bears witness, within and without the world he inhabits, he pens a tale of impossible…

Movie Review: 'Iron Man 3' Entertaining, But Not As Good As the Original

Robert Downey earns high praise, but critics are less enthusiastic about the third installment in the Iron Man franchise.

Just how good is Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man? Very good according to Brian Bishop of The Verge. "There’s great pleasure just in watching Robert Downey Jr. play this role — he’s so good it’s hard to shake the feeling that we’re just watching the real Downey riff — and in terms of summer blockbusters even one great performance can be a luxury, much less the assortment you’ll find here," Bishop wrote. "Iron Man 3 is a fun ride that’s executed well, and there’s celebration to be had in that alone. But the original was that rare film that moved beyond the confines of genre to offer all audiences something to love. Iron Man 3 doesn’t quite get there. It’s entertaining, but it feels like something’s missing. Then again, the bar was set pretty …

Movie Review: 'Oblivion' Beautiful to Look at, but Ultimately Underwhelming

Movie stars Tom Cruise, Morgan Freeman, Olga Kurylenko, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Melissa Leo and Zoë Bell.

"The story probably doesn’t stand up to heavy scrutiny, and at times the effort by star and director shows....But at least the effort is there," wrote  Bill Goodykoontz of the Arizona Republic in his review of "Oblivion."  "The film is beautiful to look at ... The puzzlements will be explained by the end, but as is often the case, the fun is in the getting there." The year is 2077. Jack Harper (Tom Cruise) and Victoria (Andrea Riseborough) are work partners and lovers on an earth that was destroyed by invading alien Scavengers. Jack and Vicki are preparing to leave earth for Titan, a safe moon where the remaining humans have fled. Jack is plagued by nightmares and visions of his life before in New York. These nightmares hold the key to …

'42': Is the Jackie Robinson Movie Worth a Look?

Here's a trailer and reviews of the movie starring Harrison Ford and Chadwick Boseman and playing this weekend in Dacula.

There are people around who remember when Jackie Robinson entered major league baseball by joining the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947. My father was one of them. As someone for whom ability trumped race, Daddy talked about Robinson's skills as a first baseball, a hitter, and most of all, his incredible speed and wily base stealing. He also mentioned the vile, violent reaction many people had to a black man desegregating white baseball. Academy Award winning screenwriter Brian Helgeland directs "42," a baseball biopic about Jackie Robinson during his first season with the Dodgers. The subtitle is "The Story of an American Legend," and it rings true, because Robinson was. He was recruited by Dodgers owner Branch Rickey (Harrison Ford) and told not…

Evil Dead Remake a 'Geyser of Gore'

Critics say remake of Sam Raimi's 1981 cult classic is a crowd pleaser and "one hell of a ride."

Can this remake of Sam Raimi's 1981 cult classic please audiences? According to some critics, the answer is yes. "When it was first announced that a remake of Sam Raimi’s classic 80s horror film was being put into production, I was with the rest of you groaning at the idea of yet another Hollywood rehash, but I am now very happy to say that I was wrong. Backed by great performances by a young cast, and a seemingly unending number of high-tension, disturbingly gory horror sequences, the new movie is the definition of crowd-pleaser and one hell of a ride," wrote Eric Eisenberg of Cinema Blend in his review. Take a young woman with a heroin addiction. Add two friends. Place them in an isolated cabin in the woods. Add her older brother. Then …

Movie Review: 'The Rock' Delivers in 'G.I. Joe: Retaliation'

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson stars as Roadblock in the G.I. Joe sequel.

"The Rock is, no question, a charisma machine, the uncontested heir apparent to Schwarzenegger, and when he pursues Ray Stevenson’s Firefly (whose secret weapons are exploding fireflies) in a tank, on foot and then on a boat is something of an energy surge. Unfortunately, there’s a lot of dead space between these sexy moments," writes Jordan Hoffman of ScreenCrush about "G.I. Joe: Retaliation," a follow-up to the 2009 blockbuster "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra." In "G.I. Joe: Retaliation," according to the film's official website, the team is "not only fighting their mortal enemy Cobra, but they are forced to contend with threats from within the government that jeopardize their very existence."  Here's what critics are saying: "G.I. Joe: …
