Alcova Elementary Unveils Mural

Students created a massive mural depicting school and surrounding community.

After two and a half months of hard work by 170 students, Alcova Elementary unveiled a 48-foot long community mural at its holiday concert Dec. 9. The mural, funded with proceeds from the school's annual art show, consists of 12 4' x 7' panels and required about 60 gallons of paint. More than 170 students worked on the massive art project. "We always make it a big deal to hang [the students'] artwork up, but I wanted to try to give something back to the community," said Sarah Erickson, the art teacher who oversaw the project. "We were hoping to build school pride, and make the students feel ownership of it so they would take care of it." Fifth-grade students worked on the large panels during art class.
