Brett Smith calls for the Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners to postpone any important votes until a new District 1 representative is seated.
While some may be pleased to see the airport privatization issue on the June 5 Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners agenda, Propeller Airports CEO Brett Smith is not. Smith plans to hold a press conference Monday afternoon "to address Tuesday’s Gwinnett County Commission agenda issue on his company’s proposal to expand the Briscoe Field in order to accommodate commercial passenger flights." In a released statement, Smith said, “Since the District 1 Commission seat is now vacant, no important issues should be voted on by the Commission until a new District 1 Commission representative is seated. It would be incredibly unfair to have a vote on a major issue affecting the whole county if that district is not represented." District 1 …

Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners meet with airport consultants to discuss the future of Briscoe Field.
The Gwinnett Board of Commissioners had a lot of company Tuesday morning in Lawrenceville for a meeting to discuss the possible privatization of Briscoe Field. Citizens wearing red to signify their opposition to privatization were in the room with commissioners and consultants from IMG, the company hired to help the county with the potential privatization of the county-owned airport. County Commission Chairman Charlotte Nash told the crowd that it was not a public hearing or a question-answer session. The potential of commercial passenger service -- and takeoffs and landings at odd hours -- came up quickly Tuesday. IMG official Steve Steckler advised that airports receiving federal assistance are obligated to accept such passenger service…

A Roswell man has asked the Roswell City Council to reach out to the Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners regarding the potential privatization of Briscoe Field. According to a WSB Radio story, Creed Crutchfield is concerned about the impact the privatization of Briscoe Field could have on air and ground traffic in his community. Propeller Airports CEO Brett Smith called Crutchfield’s concerns premature and said, "Since no plan is out there, I would ask everybody to hold judgment because this is putting the cart before the horse at this point.” (see the WSB-TV interview here). Last month, Smith made headlines locally when he issued a press release advising his company was collecting resumes in anticipation of Gwinnett County leadership …

A look at a few of the top stories this week on Dacula Patch.
Propeller Airports Now Accepting Resumes Propeller Airports issued a press release this week announcing the company was currently collecting resumes “in anticipation of the County leadership moving forward with this historic economic development project” i.e. the privatization of Briscoe Field. Given that the county has yet to issue RFPs for privatization, this release raised quite a few eyebrows in our community. Propeller is one of three companies that responded to the county’s initial request for qualifications (RFQs), but being listed as a company that is interested in privatizing the airport is a far cry from being given a contract to privatize the airport. Presumably the other two companies who filed RFQs intend to participate in the…

On Aug. 29, Propeller Airports issued a press release advising resumes are now being collected “in anticipation of the County leadership moving forward with this historic economic development project.” The “historic economic development project” is the controversial privatization of Briscoe Field. Last week, the Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners voted again to move forward with requests for proposals (RFPs) from firms interested in privatizing the airport. Propeller CEO Brett Smith said his objective, should Propeller be the company selected by the county to privatize Briscoe Field, would be to try and fill jobs locally. “With close to 10.1 percent unemployment throughout Georgia and over 35,000 people searching for jobs right here in…
