GDOT Putting Brakes on Holiday Road Work

No lane closures planned during Memorial Day weekend.

The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) is suspending construction-related lane closures during the Memorial Day weekend. Motorists will be able to enjoy the open lanes from Friday, May 27 at 5 a.m. until Monday, May 30 at 10 p.m. GDOT is advising travelers to exercise caution as heavy holiday traffic is expected.  “Historically, Georgia experiences more than 2,000 crashes resulting in more than a dozen fatalities and more than a thousand injuries during the Memorial Day weekend,” said Transportation Commissioner Vance. C. Smith, Jr., in a released statement.  “Enjoy your holiday, but please be very careful while driving.”

I-85 Sign Installation Work Continues

No daytime lane closures planned next week.

As part of the conversion of the existing High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes on I-85 to High Occupancy Toll (HOT) lanes, the Georgia Department of Transportation will continue work to install more than 60 signs along the I-85 corridor next week. The work is taking place overnight. Traffic pacing may occur between 11 p.m. and 4 a.m. This week, as weather permits, one or two segments of the HOV or inside lanes along the median wall in both directions will be closed. Northbound lane closures will take place between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. and southbound closures will occur from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Up to three lanes could be closed after midnight. New Interstate Sign Installation Projects Begin

Signs on I-85 and I-985 to be upgraded.

Dacula area commuters could face delays on I-85 as the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) begins upgrading signs along the interstate from the I-85/I-985 split to the state line. The new signs will make it easier for travelers to read information during low light conditions. The I-85 signage project is expected to cost $2.2 million. A $2.1 million project on I-985 will upgrade signs from the split to the interstate’s end at exit 24. “These signs are ten years old and are losing their retro-reflectivity, meaning the signs aren’t reflecting back to the driver well in low light conditions,” said State Traffic Engineer Kathy Zahul in a released statement. “The signs may look fine during the day but in low light conditions, they can be…
