Several Dacula area teachers have been selected as Teacher of the Year for their individual schools. Teachers chosen for this honor will compete for the title of the 2013 Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) Teacher of the Year (TOTY). “Being selected at the local level means that other individuals in the profession recognize the instructional expertise and communal value the local TOTY brings to their school,” said Nikki Mouton, Gwinnett’s executive director of staff development, in a released statement. “This is an opportunity to highlight the attention to excellence the entire school has as their TOTY represents the phenomenal instruction and professionalism taking place throughout their building.” Later this month, the group of 131 …

Three of the six Gwinnett teachers selected as Gwinnett County Teacher of the Year finalists are from Dacula area schools. Brittany Palazzo of Mulberry Elementary, Keri Beth Tidmore Jones of Dacula Middle and Aundrea Muth of Mill Creek High School join Jennifer Dunn of Pharr Elementary, Sarah Black of North Gwinnett Middle and Lindsey Cafarella of Peachtree Ridge High as the six finalists. Palazzo, a graduate of Gwinnett County Public Schools, joined the inaugural staff of Mulberry Elementary in 2007, after working at Dacula Elementary and Centerville Elementary. A total of 25 Gwinnett County Public School (GCPS) teachers have been selected as semifinalists for the 2012 Gwinnett County Teacher of the Year award. The semifinalists were chosen from an initial list of 129 GCPS teachers nominated by their colleagues as “Teachers of the Year.” Dacula area semifinalists are: A selection committee will narrow the pool of 25 semifinalists to six finalists. Committee members will then make site visits to observe the teachers and conduct in-depth interviews. From the six finalists, committee members will select an elementary, middle school and high school teacher of the year. One of these teachers will be honored as the GCPS 2012 Teacher of the Year. Dallas Gillespie named top art educator.
Dallas Gillespie, a visual arts instructor at Osborne Middle School (OMS), was recently honored as the 2010 Georgia Art Education Association Middle Teacher of the Year. Gillespie, who has taught at OMS since the school opened in 2004, was selected for the award based on both his accomplishments and those of his students. "Their accomplishments are part of my accomplishments," Gillespie explained. "You put so much into them. You live through your students." As a painter, sculptor and professional photographer, Gillespie is eager to pass along his love of visual arts to his students.
