Tips to Avoid Holiday Weight Gain

How to keep the pounds off during Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Just because the holidays have arrived, it doesn’t mean weight gain has to come too. Antonio Cain, a registered and licensed dietitian at Dekalb Medical Center, says the key is to remain conscious about the amounts and types of foods you choose throughout the holidays. “Many people simply just don’t think. So much food is presented at once and often times we overeat,” Cain said. It’s difficult to pass on many of the holiday foods, especially since they are filled with tradition. So Cain suggests before a holiday meal, eat some fruits or veggies and drink water to prevent overeating. During the meal choose lean cuts of meat, avoid fried foods and serve yourself on smaller plates or use smaller serving utensils. He says it’s important to …

Thanksgiving Day by the Numbers

The U.S. Census Bureau shares information ranging from the value of turkey imports to total production of pumpkins and cherries.

In the fall of 1621, the Pilgrims, early settlers of Plymouth Colony, held a three-day feast to celebrate a bountiful harvest, an event many regard as the nation’s first Thanksgiving. Historians have also recorded ceremonies of thanks among other groups of European settlers in North America, including British colonists in Virginia in 1619. The legacy of thanks and the feast have survived the centuries, as the event became a national holiday in 1863 when President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed the last Thursday of November as a national day of thanksgiving. Later, President Franklin Roosevelt clarified that Thanksgiving should always be celebrated on the fourth Thursday of the month to encourage earlier holiday shopping, never on the …

A Thankful Heart

What my kids have taught me about gratitude.

It's that time of year again where I reflect on all the things that I am grateful for. Being a parent has helped me to not take things for granted and to appreciate many simple moments in life. Here is a list of the top 10 things that I've learned to be thankful for since I became a mother. 1. The value of a good night's sleep. Seriously, I had never known true exhaustion until I became a parent. Now that my children sleep soundly through the night, I thank my lucky stars for 8 hours of uninterrupted bliss. Without it, I turn into a crazy person. 2. A closed bathroom door. It's rare that I spend time powdering my nose without a child following me in there. Oh, but those moments that I do escape are so beautiful, even if both of my …

From Where I Stand

Thanksgiving Should Be More Than One Day a Year

One of my favorite holidays is this week -- Thanksgiving Day.

One of my favorite holidays is this week. Many people make plans to drive long distances to be with family and friends on Thanksgiving Day. Every year in November, a proclamation is issued by our government setting aside a day in which we are to express our thanks. It seems rather strange we would have to wait on the government to proclaim a day when we would reflect upon blessings enough to utter the two words, “Thank you.” We all know people who spend the majority of their time finding something to complain or gripe about. Nothing seems to ever be right to those people with a wrong and negative attitude about life. We know bad things do happen to people. There are many negative events occurring in every life each year. That is life. It …

Turkey Dressing Recipe That Eats Like a Meal

This dressing recipe is hearty enough to serve as a main dish.

Many, many years ago, we got to my grandmother's house early enough one Thanksgiving for me to see her make the dressing for our Thanksgiving dinner. I watched and learned. As far as I know, she never wrote it down anywhere and I never had either until I got ready to write this article. You see, there are quite a few things I make by eyeballing ingredients. Some things I add until the recipe looks right, some things until it tastes right and some things until it smells right. In the case of this dressing recipe, it takes a little of all three. However, since I cannot be there to eyeball your efforts, I've done the best I could in writing this down. This is not your typical, stuff-it-in-a-bird, dressing. This is an eats-like-a-meal dressing…
