Balancing Brooms, Solar Storms and Party Arrests

Here's a look back at five of our most popular stories in Dacula last week.

Balancing Brooms and Eggs - Why Are These Pictures Everywhere? Did you try it for yourself? Seems like everyone else did! Some are claiming this broom and egg balancing is the result of the vernal equinox but experts say otherwise. Experts suggest that you will still be able to stand your broom on its bristles weeks, months and years from now. My question is this, what makes one an expert on broom standing anyway? Gingrich Wins Georgia; Romney Takes 6 States; Santorum 3 Newt Gingrich won Georgia’s Republican presidential primary on Tuesday, March 6. With 99 percent of Georgia’s precincts reporting, Gingrich, the former U.S. House speaker, was leading with 47.2 percent of the vote, followed by Romney at 25.9 percent, Santorum at 19.6 …

Drug Cartels, Twitter Impersonation and 'The Voice'

A look at a few of the top stories this week on Dacula Patch.

Drug Cartel Members Associated With Buford Stash House Sentenced This, to me, was the most fascinating crime story of the week. I am amazed at how much drug money and how much cocaine was being shipped and stored within a few miles of our homes. One of the stash houses was located in a subdivision right off Hamilton Mill Road. A $4.7 million money transfer was made at the Mall of Georgia. Think how often drugs and money might be moving up and down our stretch of I-85 and how often these drug cartel members might exit at Hamilton Mill to get to a nearby stash house. If you ever needed an incentive to report suspicious activity to police, this is it.  Police Solve Twitter Impersonation Case We all know teens sometimes do things without fully…

HOT Lanes, Hot Under the Collar and Not Too Hot Economic Times

A look at a few of the top stories this week on Dacula Patch.

Do They Hear Us Now? It has been two weeks and it doesn’t look as if the toll lanes are gaining in popularity despite Gov. Nathan Deal’s attempt to make the trip cost more palatable. Did Gov. Deal’s response to the public outcry indicate officials really are listening to the public regarding this issue? I do not know, but some people are not taking any chances. Be sure to read “Would You Sign a Petition to End the HOT Lanes?” for more on one man’s effort to stop the HOT lanes cold.   HOT Lanes: Traffic Management or Government Extortion? Not only are some people upset about the impact the toll lanes have had on the non-Lexus lanes, some people are also questioning the entire rationale behind the HOT lanes. Were they really built for …

Meth Lab Scare, Toll Lane Protest and the Importance of Knowing Before You Go

A look at a few of the top stories this week on Dacula Patch.

Fort Daniels Location Site of Possible Meth Lab Just what you wanted to hear right? Police found remnants of a meth lab just down the street from Fort Daniel Elementary School earlier this week. The good news is that no hazardous chemicals were found and no one was injured. The bad news is that once again we are confronted with the reality that serious criminal activity can take place anywhere -- including Dacula.   Peach Pass Protest Page Launched on Facebook Talk about riled up! There were a lot of unhappy commuters this week as the toll lanes went into effect. Many had speculated the toll lane implementation would worsen traffic in the other lanes and those fears were unfortunately realized during the week. The resulting uproar was …

Dysfuntional Board, Borderline Insubordination and Attempted Deal Making

A look at a few of the top stories this week on Dacula Patch.

Community Rallying Around Former DHS Drummer You often hear people jokingly say “No good deed goes unpunished,” but this past week it was horrifyingly true. Caleb Graves, a Dacula High School graduate, was seriously injured while attempting to help a stranded motorist. Graves was struck by a passing car and remains hospitalized at Gwinnett Medical Center. The driver of the vehicle that struck Graves fled the scene and remains at large. Click on the link above to learn how you can help this young man who friends describe as an amazing role model. Beaudreau Calls Airport Proposal Delay ‘Borderline Insubordination’ I realize government meeting news isn’t always the most exciting thing to read on the Internet, but sometimes it is the most …

Not So Public Tax Rate Increase Talks, Missing Monkey and Trash Plan Ruling

A look at the top stories this week on Dacula Patch.

If you missed last week’s Dacula City Council meeting in which elected officials discussed a proposed millage rate increase, you were not alone. In what City Administrator Jim Osborne described as an oversight, Dacula Patch was not notified of the meeting, nor was notice of the meeting posted on the city’s website. Though legal notice was sent to the classifieds department at the Gwinnett Daily Post, the newsroom did not get the word and, therefore, no media was present for the discussion. While oversights can and will happen, it is of course a concern when officials fail to take advantage of the numerous methods of communicating with the public that are at their disposal. From the day the decision was made to call the meeting (June 16), …
