Some legislators acknowledge the freebies can look bad, but they say the state's new ethics law will make it harder to mingle with constituents.
Georgia legislators who want to sit in the president's suite above the hedges at Sanford Stadium next year will have to pay their own way, thanks to ethics legislation signed by Gov. Nathan Deal last week. The law forbids elected officials from receiving gifts or event tickets exceeding $75. University System of Georgia lobbyists gave state and local lawmakers more than $14,000 in football tickets in 2012, the Athens Banner-Herald reports. The paper quotes state Sen. Bill Cowsert, whose district includes Athens, saying the football games have been a good way for him to mingle with his constitutents. “I think it’s really going to change things," Cowsert is quoted saying of the new ethics law. "I think it’s going to make it tougher for the …

If the Bulldogs beat Bama, they're likely headed to Miami to take on Notre Dame for the BCS title.
Talk about a high stakes game. On Dec. 1, the No. 3 Georgia Bulldogs and the No. 2 Alabama Crimson Tide battle for a SEC championship, but there is an even bigger prize at stake. The Bulldogs haven't won a national title since they beat Notre Dame in 1980, despite fielding one of the most consistently successful teams in the country. As Dan Wolken of USA Today put it, "There aren't many opportunities to put 30 years of frustration aside as a program, but Georgia is on the doorstep of one of them." To get in the door, the Bulldogs have to defeat No. 2 Alabama, no easy feat. Seth Emerson reports for the Ledger-Enquirer that the teams are pretty evenly matched, with Georgia bringing the nation's No. 1 quarterback in pass efficiency and …

For some, getting a B.S., B.A. or M.S. while in college is a top priority. Others may be focusing their efforts on a different set of letters -- Mrs. Amber Estes, a sophomore from Athens majoring in public relations at the University of Georgia, recently penned an essay for the Red and Black in which she outlined the steps necessary to secure a husband while at college. According to Estes, female students have only four years to attain security for their future. “That’s right ladies, four years to find a husband. Every true woman knows how vital it is to find the right brilliant babe to father their children and replenish their bank accounts,” Estes wrote in the July 6 commentary. Estes then proceeds to lay out six steps for catching a …

Georgia continues its Tennessee road trip this weekend with a visit to Nashville. The Bulldogs managed a 20-12 win in Knoxville, but will Vanderbilt be more of a challenge than the Volunteers? The Commodores were shut out last week by No. 2 Alabama and fell to South Carolina by a 21-3 margin the previous week. Vanderbilt is the underdog in Saturday's matchup, but the Bulldogs will be fighting to keep their winning momentum without outside linebacker Cornelius Washington who will be serving the second of a two-game suspension for a DUI arrest. Will the Bulldogs keep their winning streak alive? Tell us in the comments.

The University of Georgia will attempt to improve its SEC record this week against the Bulldogs of Mississippi State. Georgia (2-2, 1-1 SEC) is coming off a 27-13 win at Ole Miss. The win was the first conference victory for UGA after losing to South Carolina on Sept. 10. Mississippi State (2-2, 0-2 SEC) returns to action after a tough outing against Louisiana Tech (1-3). Mississippi State barely managed to win in overtime against a team whose only win this season was in overtime against Central Arkansas. Will a home field advantage and last week's taste of SEC success be enough to help UGA win? Cast your vote in our poll.

UGA’s Richt emerges victorious in the “Hot Seat Bowl.”
The University of Georgia improved to 2-2 today with a 27-13 victory over Ole Miss. The Bulldogs’ second conference game of the season -- dubbed by some media as the “Hot Seat Bowl” -- pitted embattled UGA coach Mark Richt against a similarly challenged Houston Nutt of the University of Mississippi. Both teams entered today’s matchup 1-2. Georgia picked up its first win of the season last week against Coastal Carolina. The sole win of the season to date for Ole Miss was the Rebels’ Sept. 10 victory over Southern Illinois. Both teams needed a conference win today -- the Bulldogs made it happen. Georgia jumped out to a 17-0 lead before the Rebels put points on the board with a 38-yard pass from Randall Mackey to Donte Moncrief with five …
