U.S. Postal Service to End Saturday Mail Delivery

The plan reportedly would save the agency about $2 billion annually.

Saturday mail delivery may soon end. According to an ABC News report, the United States Postal Service is expected to announce Feb. 6 that it will end Saturday mail delivery in August 2013, but will continue to make Saturday package deliveries. The plan would save the agency about $2 billion annually, the report says. Also, delivery to post office boxes would continue on Saturdays and post offices now open on Saturdays would remain open on Saturdays. Over the past several years, the Postal Service has advocated shifting to a five-day delivery schedule for mail and packages. Though an independent agency, the service still is subject to congressional control.

Dacula Police Blotter

Holiday Crime Alert: Mail Thief Snatches Video Game, Cell Phone Accessories

Package was still in mailbox, but contents had been taken.

With the holidays come an increased number of gift shipments and, unfortunately, increased opportunities for thieves. Thieves may steal packages off door stoops, remove them from mailboxes or simply open them and take whatever is inside the package. Such was the case with a local woman who recently received a package in the mail, but not the contents. The Biltmore Rose Court resident contacted police on Dec. 1 to report a Nintendo Wii game and a cell phone accessory kit had been stolen. The package, according to the police report, was found in the mailbox but it had been opened and the contents removed. The total value of the stolen items was estimated at $75. The United States Postal Service (USPS) offers several tips for keeping mail …

Postal Service Warns of Default Risk

Without legislative changes, the United States Postal Service will reach its statutory borrowing limit and be forced to default on payments to the federal government.

The United States Postal Service posted net losses of $5.7 billion for the first nine months of its fiscal year with hints of a possible default if not bailed out by the federal government. Although it falls under the control of the federal government, the USPS receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on its own retail services to fund operations. Last month, the USPS announced plans to study almost 3,700 under-utilized post offices for possible closure and introduced the new village post office concept. Under the village post office model, postal services would be handled by locals businesses, such as pharmacies and grocery stores. The Dacula Post Office is not on the study list, but several Atlanta locations are. “We …

Neither Snow nor Rain nor Heat nor Gloom of Night ...

Postal service set to resume today in Dacula area after major service interruption.

"Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds." Though it's not an official motto of the U.S. Post Office, we are used to getting our mail delivered on a pretty regular basis. But the snow and ice are not part of the bargain apparently. According to an update from the U.S. Postal Service, "severe weather conditions in Atlanta, GA and in ZIP Codes 300, 303, 302 301, 305 and 306 have caused major interruptions and delays in mail delivery ... Due to the icy road conditions, many postal facilities in these ZIP Codes have suspended operations." USPS spokesman Michael Miles of Atlanta said that the Gwinnett area was one of the hardest hit. "We can deliver in the cold …
