Local Educators Honored as Teacher of the Year Semifinalists

Four Dacula area teachers are in the running for the school system’s top honor.

A total of 25 Gwinnett County Public School (GCPS) teachers have been selected as semifinalists for the 2012 Gwinnett County Teacher of the Year award. The semifinalists were chosen from an initial list of 129 GCPS teachers nominated by their colleagues as “Teachers of the Year.” Dacula area semifinalists are: A selection committee will narrow the pool of 25 semifinalists to six finalists. Committee members will then make site visits to observe the teachers and conduct in-depth interviews. From the six finalists, committee members will select an elementary, middle school and high school teacher of the year. One of these teachers will be honored as the GCPS 2012 Teacher of the Year. New State Funded Virtual High School Launches this Fall

Find out what is happening in local Dacula area schools each Monday on the Patch.

Provost Academy is a uniquely designed, state-authorized, online public high school for students in grades nine through twelve. Classes for the 2011-2012 school years at the Academy will begin in August of 2011. Provost Academy is a free public high school just like attending Mill Creek or Dacula, there are no tuition costs. There is a possibility of fees for extracurricular activities, field trips and school supplies just like other public schools. Students who attend this online school are required to have a computer with high speed Internet access. If a student does not have this equipment, it may be possible to receive via loan from the school or receive a subsidy based on financial needs. Students who meet all graduation requirements …

New OMS Students Invited to Hawk Training Camp

Rising sixth graders attending Osborne Middle School are invited to attend Hawks Training Camp. This is a special opportunity for students to learn everything they need to know before attending middle school. Camp is scheduled for June 27 - 30 from 9 a.m. until 12 p.m. Interested students may sign up through the Mill Creek Community School, cost is $85. The camp will be held on the OMS campus and registration will close on May 30. Education News: Kindergarten Registration Set for Class of 2024

A look at recent happenings in Dacula area schools.

Parents and guardians of children attending kindergarten in the fall of 2011, mark your calendars as the Gwinnett County Public Schools will be holding kindergarten registration on May 5 for children who turn five years of age on or before September 1, 2011.  Families of these students need to plan on visiting their local public school to register on this date. The first day of school for these new students is scheduled for August 8, 2011.  You can check registration times for your particular school by visiting the GCPS website and viewing the “2011 Countdown for Kindergarten” section or call your local school.
