Principal Kellye Riggins sent email to parents regarding Dec. 3 incident at Dacula Middle School.

Dacula Middle School principal Kellye Riggins today (Dec. 10) addressed concerns regarding a Dec. 3 incident at Dacula Middle School.  In an email sent to parents, Riggins indicated she wished to address rumors circulating regarding the disciplinary incident. Riggins wrote, "In disciplinary situations like this, we work with the parents of the two students involved in the situation. However, as I am hearing a number of unsettling and inaccurate versions of what occurred, I felt it prudent to reach out to you to give you information that will help squelch the rumors circulating. While I cannot share with you details about this incident because of the age of our students, I do want to reassure you of several things. First, while one of our …

Dacula Middle School Chosen by District to Accept Transfer Students

Four Gwinnett County Schools did not meet AYP requirements, and students from these schools may choose to transfer to Dacula Middle.

Dacula Middle School has been designated as a school that will accept choice transfer students for the 2011-2012 school year. According to a press release, these students will come from other Gwinnett County middle schools that did not meet the AYP (Adequate Yearly Progress) for two or more years. This program, under the provision of the federal No Child Left Behind Act, allows parents to transfer their children from a school that has not made AYP for two years in a row to another school in the district.   During the 2010-2011 school year, 25 Gwinnett County schools did not met the AYP. Four of these schools failed to meet the AYP in 2009-2010 as well, and students from these schools are now eligible to transfer. These four schools are …

The Way I See It

Teaching to Learn or Teaching to Test?

What good is teaching to test if students cannot balance a checkbook, write a grammatically correct letter or do simple math without the use of a calculator?

There is hardly a day that goes by in any given week that I don't pass Dacula Middle School and Dacula High School in my goings and comings. As I pass Dacula Middle School, I sometimes notice acronyms and dates posted on the sign out front. Are these acronyms the criterion tests I hear and read so much about? When I see these acronyms and dates, I invariably ask myself the question: "Are we teaching our kids to learn or are we teaching our kids to test?" I will have to admit that I am from the old school where I was taught to learn the subject matter. When test time came, testing took care of itself. Teaching to learn or teaching to test was a question I asked a retired educator at lunch last week. She confirmed there was enormous pressure…

Dacula Middle School basketball players take course in character development.

The Dacula Middle School boys' basketball team is learning not only how to win on the court, but also learning how to win in the biggest game of all: the game of life. The team participates in a program called "Character Academy."  Each week the team sits down in a classroom setting and discusses topics such as humility, teamwork and respect.  "Character Academy has instilled a value for character that is far more important than the game of basketball," said Dacula head coach Jason Thomas. The Character Academy program was created by assistant coach David Bethea.  The mission of the program is spelled out on the cover of the Character Academy portfolio distributed to the players: "Our mission is to train our players to become young men of …
