Lightning Strike Causes Outbuilding Fire

Gwinnett County Fire and Emergency Services crews responded to several storm related incidents on May 21.

An outbuilding was completely destroyed by fire after lightning struck a nearby tree during Monday evening's storms. Firefighters were dispatched to the 2900 block of Bart Johnson Road (off Hamilton Mill Road) in Buford at 7:25 p.m. after a 50x50 outbuilding caught fire. According to a Gwinnett County Fire and Emergency Services (GCFES) press release, the outbuilding was near a travel trailer, propane tanks and a single family residence. "Due to the advanced state of the fire, crews operated in a defensive mode," stated GCFES public information officer Lt. Eric Eberly. "Firefighters deployed numerous handlines to protect exposures and extinguish the fire." The outbuilding is a total loss, but the residence was undamaged. As severe weather …

Child Seriously Burned in Accident

Firefighters were approached at the intersection of Dacula Road and Fence Road by a father holding his injured daughter.

A Gwinnett County Fire and Emergency Services (GCFES) engine company was stopped at a red light at the intersection of Dacula Road and Fence Road shortly after 5 p.m. Tuesday evening when a man approached carrying his injured daughter. The 11-month-old child had extensive burns to her whole body, according to GCFES public information officer Lt. Eric Eberly. The family informed fire personnel that the child had accidentally burned herself after pulling over a pot of hot liquid.  “The family was transporting the child to the hospital when they saw the Gwinnett Fire apparatus at the intersection,” Eberly stated in the release. “When they turned the child over to our care, our paramedic firefighters immediately noticed the extensiveness of …

Arsonist Torches Trash Cans

Police and fire investigators looking into a series of more than 20 intentionally set trash bin fires.

UPDATED Dec. 28 at 11:16 a.m. Several trash cans were burned, but no one was injured in a string of arson incidents that occurred on Dec. 22 in the Dacula area. A New Hope Road resident arrived home shortly after 2 a.m. on Dec. 22 to find Gwinnett County Fire and Emergency Services personnel extinguishing two flaming trash cans at her residence. The incident was just one of eight reported that evening. Police and firefighters were also called to homes on Gracebrook Drive, Luke Edwards Road and Indian Bluffs Drive. The eight incidents were the latest in a series of intentionally set trash bin fires in the Dacula and Lawrenceville areas dating back to August according to Gwinnett County Fire and Emergency Services public information officer …

Body of Missing Swimmer Found

Man had been missing since Saturday.

After nearly two days of searching, officials have located the body of a missing swimmer at Lake Lanier. The man was first reported missing around 8 p.m. on Saturday, June 25. Bystanders told Gwinnett County Fire and Emergency Services (GCFES) personnel the man had been wading in the water. The bystanders said the man could not swim and was not wearing a life jacket. The GCFES swift water and the Hall County dive team conducted an underwater search, but were unable to locate the victim Saturday evening. Sunday attempts to locate the body were also unsuccessful. Three Injured in Accident on Spout Springs Road

GCPD investigating accident involving cement truck and two other vehicles.

Three people were injured in an accident earlier today on Spout Springs Road near Duncans Shore Drive. The accident, which occurred around 11 a.m. this morning, involved a cement truck, a small pickup truck and a mid-size sport utility vehicle according to Gwinnett County Fire and Emergency Services acting public information officer Lt. Eric Eberly. The driver of the pickup truck was entrapped in his vehicle. Crews used the “Jaws of Life” to free the patient, Eberly said. Two patients were transported to Gwinnett Medical Center in Lawrenceville. One patient is listed as critical and another suffered minor injuries.
