The jackpot for the Saturday, May 18 drawing was $600 million.
Somewhere in Florida, a lucky Powerball winner is holding a piece of paper worth approximately $600 million. Prior to the May 18 drawing, lottery officials had predicted there would be a winner given 80 percent of the possible number combinations were in play. They were right. Not only did one ticket match the winning numbers of 10-13-14-22-52-11, but over 7.5 million players won non-jackpot prizes totalling $83.9 million. In Georgia, two players won a $1 million prize by matching five numbers and 17 players matched four numbers plus the Powerball to win $10,000. The jackpot-winning ticket, however, was sold at a Publix in Zephyrhills, Fla. according to Fox News. The next Powerball drawing will be held Wednesday, May 22 at 11 p.m. The …

With no winner in the Powerball drawing on Wednesday, May 15, the jackpot has soared even higher for the Saturday, May 18 drawing. Initially set at $475 million, lottery officials announced Thursday afternoon the jackpot had been increased to $550 million -- the second highest jackpot in Powerball history and the third highest in U.S. history. According to an Associated Press article posted by Fox News, lottery officials expect jackpot totals of this size to continue to climb in shorter amounts of time following a game redesign in January 2012 that increased the odds of winning some kind of prize but also lowered the possible number combinations to win …

Call me skeptical if you wish, but I think the decision has been made to build more HOT lanes.
In today’s column, we pretend we are a fly on the wall down at GDOT when they are trying to figure another way to stick it to the taxpayers. With a recorder going, we hear one of the people say: “I know, we will tell them that by building another lane all the way to the ocean, congestion will be relieved on the Gwinnett Interstate.” Another says, “Oh, no, they would not believe that.” Someone else adds, “I know, let us tell them we will be able to make $100 million by adding a user fee to the lane we build.” Someone asked rather shyly, “Will we really make that much money?” “Of course not, silly,” is the reply, “but the people will believe anything we tell them.” Someone else speaks up with these great words of wisdom, “I know, let us do a…

Last week, lottery officials approved an online system for selling tickets for the Powerball, Mega Millions and Fantasy 5 Georgia lottery games, GPB News reports. The new system, which is expected to go into effect in the fall, would require that ticket purchasers be at least 18 years of age and reside in Georgia. According to the Atlanta Journal Constitution, the new system is expected to increase Georgia Lottery revenue by millions and open the lottery to more players. “I think that is a useful area to explore,” Gov. Nathan Deal told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “It does open the participation up to a generation of younger citizens of our state who might not take the time to go to a store to physically purchase a ticket.” Proceeds …
