Robinson, Wells Take Oath of Office

New year begins with committee appointments, one planning and zoning case.

The Dacula City Council kicked off 2012 by certifying the results of the Dec. 6 runoff between Hubert Wells and Tim Montgomery. Wells, the winner of the runoff, and Sue Robinson, who ran unopposed, were sworn in during Thursday night's Dacula City Council meeting (see video). With a full slate of duly sworn officials, the council began work by unanimously approving a rezoning request for property located at 1271 Harbins Road in Dacula. The owner of the property, Lloyd DeLatour of Great Beginnings, had requested a 3-acre portion of his property be rezoned from office-institutional unit to agricultural district. Dacula City Planner Joey Murphy said the planning department was in favor of the rezoning and expected no adverse impacts. OTHER …

Sunday Sales, Liquor by the Drink Resolutions on Council Agenda

Dacula City Council to decide next week whether to allow both measures on the November ballot.

Dacula Mayor Jimmy Wilbanks said Sunday package sales and the Sunday sales of liquor by the drink could have a positive economic impact on the city. “I look at it as an economic development issue, other people will look at it as a moral and religious issue,” he said. SB 10 allows local governments statewide to hold referendums on whether or not to permit Sunday sales of alcohol in grocery and liquor stores. Next week, council will vote on a resolution to authorize a measure to appear on the November ballot which, if passed by the voters, would allow package sales on Sunday between the hours of 12:30 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. Wilbanks has previously said he supports the measure because local retailers, such as the city’s new 94,000-square-foot …

Estimated cost to repair system is $6,100.

Next week, the Dacula City Council will decide whether to move forward with repairs to the city’s aging tornado warning siren. Council members discussed several options during the May 26 work session including repairs, replacement and promoting the use of weather radios. Repairs to the existing Whelan system are expected to cost approximately $6,100. According to city administrator Jim Osborn, the repairs would take one day and would be handled by the nearest authorized service repair company which is based in Anniston, Ala. Osborn said it would cost $15,000 to fully modernize and replace the system. The cost for both the repairs or replacement would be taken from reserve funds. Though the city can apply for a grant from the Georgia …

Dacula Town Hall Remarks Generate National Controversy

Rep. Rob Woodall’s comments regarding the GOP Medicare reform plan have been criticized by national media. MoveOn.org’s Gwinnett chapter mobilized members to attend the meeting and pose questions.

Remarks made by Rep. Rob Woodall (R-GA-07) at a May 21 town hall meeting in Dacula have generated national controversy after excerpts were published in an article on the Huffington Post. The Huffington Post article focused on Rep. Woodall’s response to a comment regarding post-retirement medical benefits. "The private corporation that I retired from does not give medical benefits to retirees," a town hall attendee remarked to Woodall. "Hear yourself, ma'am. Hear yourself," Woodall replied. “It’s just a difference of opinion. We can agree to disagree. You want your government benefits. You want the government to take care of you because your employer decided not to take care of you. My question is, 'When do I decide I'm going to take care …

Steve, Please reread the article and then all the comments - it appears some facts are being overlooked, and in fairness, unless you pay a court stenographer you won't ever get a complete word for word report from only one scource.   more ›

Dacula Friends and Neighbors

Gregory Reeves, Dacula City Councilman

A profile of Dacula City Council's Gregory Reeves.

Not often is it easy to find oneself in an unfortunate situation and be proactive enough to turn it into something good. With Dacula City Council member Gregory Reeves, that’s exactly what he did, and now has a political career to show for it. It started back in 2003 when the city contracted with a company to do road-widening and sidewalk installation on Reeves’ street. “The contractor left huge holes – about six to eight inches deep – in our side yard and refused to do anything about it,” he said. “It was a nightmare to cut grass without breaking an ankle.” The company refused to do anything about it, so Reeves took matters into his own hands. “I fixed it myself,” he said. Today, he’s been on the city council for six years, and he …
