Gwinnett Libraries Offering Summer Reading Program

GCPL program is a fun and easy way to maintain reading skills over the summer.

The Gwinnett County Public Library’s Summer Reading Program is a fun and free way to encourage kids to read to maintain and even improve their reading skills. From now through Aug. 13, young readers can set goals, keep track of books they have read, and collect prizes. The theme for this summer’s program is “One World, Many Stories.” A children’s program and a separate program for teens (rising sixth graders and up) are available. Participants may register online or in person at any of the 15 county library branches including the Dacula library and Hamilton Mill library branches. Hamilton Mill Library Honored

Library Journal awards local branch “New Landmark Library” designation.

The Hamilton Mill branch of the Gwinnett County Public Library (GCPL) was recently recognized as a “New Landmark Library” by Library Journal.  The New Landmark Libraries project is designed to establish a set of standards for design excellence. The Hamilton Mill branch was one of 10 library buildings recognized for featuring innovative designs. “We are humbled to be part of this inaugural group of New Landmark Libraries and are pleased to be able to share our, experiences, challenges and successes,” said Nancy Stanbery-Kellam, Executive Director of the Gwinnett County Public Library in a released statement. Tax Spending Review Set for April 29

Learn how your Gwinnett County tax dollars are being spent at Friday’s SPLOST Citizen Review Committee meeting.

For every dollar purchase made in Gwinnett, consumers must pay an additional penny as part of the county’s special purpose local option sales tax (SPLOST) program. In 2005, a Joint Citizen Review Committee was formed to review plans and expenditures for SPLOST funded projects. This Friday, April 29, government officials will meet with the committee to discuss the progress of current SPLOST projects. Officials expect the current SPLOST program, which began in April 2009 and runs through March 2014, to generate as much as $730 million for transportation, parks and recreation, city projects, public safety, courthouse facilities and libraries. Hamilton Mill Library Celebrates Anniversary

One-year anniversary event held Saturday.

Dacula’s Hamilton Mill Library celebrated its first anniversary on Saturday, April 23 with music and refreshments. The Hamilton Mill library is one of 15 branches in the Gwinnett County Public Library (GCPL) system and holds the distinction of being the county's first LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified building. Some of the library's "green" features include sunshades, low-flow automatic toilets and faucets, native landscaping and pervious parking. In October 2010, the branch was recognized by the United States Green Building Council with a 2010 Excellence in Sustainability honorable mention award. The library has also been honored with a LEED Gold Certification.

Book donations provide additional funding for GCPL.

Looking for something to do with your old paperbacks and hardcovers? You can now help the Dacula Library and Hamilton Mill Library by donating your used books. Gwinnett County Public Library (GCPL), in partnership with Better World Books, is collecting used books to be sold, donated or even recycled. “No books make it to a landfill,” said GCPL representative Denise Auger. “It really does help a ton to avoid any kind of waste of all.” Auger said library patrons have asked for years to be able to donate used books. Now, through its partnership with Better World Books, the library has a way to accept book donations and generate additional revenue to fund library operations and special literacy programs.
