The latest installment in the hugely successful Bourne franchise stars Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye from “The Avengers”) as Aaron Cross, who like Jason Bourne (played by Matt Damon in the ‘The Bourne Identity,’ ‘The Bourne Supremacy’ and ‘The Bourne Ultimatum’), is on the run from the people who made him into the superspy he is. If the plot sounds familiar, it is and that, wrote Joan Alperin Schwartz of Starpulse.com, is where the problem lies. “You've seen this same plot before...many, many times before,” Schwartz wrote. Schwartz faulted the movie for its lack of character development and flat ending, but admitted the film had some exciting moments. “There are plenty of car chases, fight scenes, gun battles and crazy stunts involving leaping …

Remake of the 1990 cult classic has plenty of action and thrills, but ultimately falls short.
Ever wanted to turn fantasy into reality? In "Total Recall," Douglas Quaid (Colin Farrell) decides to do just that. Seeking an escape from his frustrating life, Quaid visits Rekall, a company that can change dreams into real memories. However, when things go wrong, Quaid suddenly finds himself a hunted man and the line between fantasy and reality begins to blur. Karen Martin of InArkansas.com describes the film as “bleak, brutal, and stuffed with questionable science. “ “There's some cool stuff, like hovercraft cars, a scrappy girly fight, dystopian sets that resemble those in Fritz Lang's Metropolis, a flasher who will bring back memories of the original film, and Cranston, who can portray an evil genius like nobody else,” Martin wrote. “…

“Magic Mike” tells the story of an aspiring entrepreneur pursuing the American dream … who are we kidding? Who really cares about the plot? Channing Tatum, Matthew McConaughey and a cast of handsome Hollywood hunks show off their best assets as strippers in an all-male revue. AP Movie Critic Christy Lemire compares the movie to “Sex and the City.” “This is a movie that’s tailor-made for groups of friends to get together and giggle and ogle at the spectacle of it all. And it is a lot of fun -- there’s no shame, we’re all friends here -- but it’s also more substantial than you might expect, and more mundane,” Lemire wrote on Boston.com. The more mundane aspect centers on Magic Mike’s (Tatum) efforts to start his own business. “Come for the …

Tom Cruise in bottomless chaps? That’s what “Rock of Ages” viewers are in for according to Steven Whitty of The Star Ledger. “Rock of Ages” is a Broadway musical-turned movie set in the 80s. A small town girl (Julianne Hough) and a big city boy (Diego Boneta) -- both hoping to make it big in Hollywood -- meet on the Sunset Strip. Their love story is intertwined with a cast of other characters including Stacee Jaxx (Tom Cruise) who Whitty described as “basically Axl Rose with a few more thorns, an unpredictable and slightly mad star in bottomless chaps.” But is the movie worth watching? “I was ready for ‘Rock of Ages.’ I wanted nothin' but a good time. I was reasonably ready to rock. The movie, full of talented performers in search of a …

Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith return to the big screen as members of MIB (the Men in Black), a secret organization that works to keep aliens out of the eye of the general public. In the third installment of this blockbuster franchise, Agent J (Will Smith) travels back in time to meet a young Agent K (Josh Brolin) in order to once again save the planet. According to Roger Moore of TheJournalTimes.com, Brolin as a young K is reason enough to see "Men in Black 3." “Dry, drawling, deadpan — he nails the flinty Texan in this sentimental sequel,” Moore wrote. “Sequels are almost by definition let-downs. But sometimes it’s enough to want a movie to work,” Moore added. Darren Bevan of TVNZ.com described the movie as lacking enough humor, but …

Alien invaders, massive explosions, attractive cast members and catchy dialogue are just some of the weapons in the “Battleship” arsenal. Loosely based on the Hasbro strategy game, “Battleship” pits Earth against heavily armed alien invaders. Peter Paras of E! Online wrote, “This is the kind of film that takes itself seriously so you don't have to.” Paras compared the movie to another naval battle flick: “Think 'Pearl Harbor,' but with aliens and way more fun.” Barbara Vancheri, of the Pittsburg Post Gazette, described the movie as “ ‘Iron Man’ meets ‘Terminator’ meets ‘Transformers’ meets ‘District 9’ meets ‘Battle Los Angeles’ and every other alien invasion movie but on the water.” Vancheri added an interesting teaser at the end of her …

For those who remember the gothic soap opera “Dark Shadows,” word of the movie version starring Johnny Depp was likely welcome. Unfortunately for fans of the television series, the transition to the big screen has been judged and found wanting. In "Dark Shadows," vampire Barnabas Collins, played by Depp, awakens from a centuries-long sleep in 1972 to find his estate and empire in near ruins. Collins predictably sets out to restore the family fortune and finds himself at odds with the witch who transformed him into a vampire in the mid-1700s. Scott Weinberg of FearNet.com described the movie as a “true stinker, in Hollywood terms.” “ ‘Dark Shadows’ suffers from a miserable pace, a confused editorial approach, and a tone that wavers between …

Magic Mike is a pretty in your face movie. If you don't mind hearing the f-bomb from multiple characters in rapid sequence throughout the whole movie and watching the drug and alcohol induced downfall of the main characters (one 19 years old) with only a sliver of hope for one (30 yr old) of them at the conclusion of the movie, this may be your flick. Otherwise, I'd think waiting until it hits …   more ›
