A total of 17 traffic deaths were reported in Georgia for the 102-hour holiday travel period which began Friday, Dec. 21 at at 6 p.m. and ended Tuesday, Dec. 25 at midnight, according to the Georgia State Patrol (GSP). GSP troopers investigated 685 crashes resulting in 300 injuries and 11 fatalities. Six traffic fatalities were investigated by other law enforcement agencies. The number of traffic-related deaths is much higher than in 2011 when three people were killed in accidents during the Christmas holiday travel period. You might also be interested in reading:

Nineteen people were killed and 263 people injured as a result of car accidents over the 102-hour Thanksgiving holiday travel period. The holiday travel period began at 6 p.m. on Nov. 21 and ended at midnight on Nov. 25. The Georgia State Patrol (GSP) investigated 11 of the 19 fatal crashes and handled 622 traffic accidents in all. Alcohol is believed to have been a contributing factor in four of the 11 traffic deaths investigated by troopers. Seven of the victims were not wearing seat belts. GSP also investigated one fatality involving a pedestrian. Georgia State Patrol filed charges against Kirk A. Sherwood, of Loganville, in an accident earlier this year that killed a transportation H.E.R.O. worker.
According to a press release from the Georgia State Patrol, Kirk A. Sherwood, 47, was arrested last night in connection with an accident Jan. 31 on Interstate 85 that resulted in the death of Department of Transportation H.E.R.O. worker Spencer Pass, 45. Warrants were served last night and Kirkland was taken to the Fulton County Jail. He is facing misdemeanor charges of second-degree vehicular homicide, violation of the Move Over law, a lane violation and two equipment violations (lights and brakes) on the trailer Sherwood was pulling at the time. It seems like there was probably 48 additional hours in the holiday this year. So, simply looking at 3 deaths in 2011 and 17 this year isn't a fare comparison. Christmas was on Sunday last year so the Monday & Tuesday time this year lead to more deaths.
