    Hi Bobby,
Arthritis is an inflammatory condition so we use anti inflammatory foods to help combat the pain. My own dog has pain in the neck from arthritis and so we give him fresh turmeric in his food, we dont give any wheat, we feed plenty of fish and we use ginger for pain. I also use the amazing services of Gwinnett Animal Hospital on Mc Gee Road in Snellville who are a fantastic resource for us and many of my clients. They are a very different type of vets as they have one foot in holistic treatment, and one foot in traditional medicine. They have an amazing massage therapist, Andrea Haupt, who has brought life to the creakiest bones right in front of my eyes. The vets give you time and patience, and its unlike anywhere else.

Part 2 If you go to the Puppy Pantry at Hamilton Mill, they will offer you a discount on each bag of Acana you buy if you mention I sent you.
I have also heard great things about Great Plains, as it is all sourced in the USA; we like Pinnacle, which you can buy from Red Bandana and we like Honest Kitchen based on reports from clients.
The trick is to think about your dogs' environment, age, health, temperament and breed and then go from there.
European hunting breeds and Asian descent dogs tend to thrive on fish based diets. Older dogs need easily digestible protein like white meat chicken and white fish, and often dairy is beneficial.
Puppies need more calcium and more fat, diabetic dogs generally speaking need fewer carbs....so just tailor make the diet to your dogs needs and you'll see a huge difference. Bon Appetit!

Part 1 I really like Acana food made by Champion pet foods in Canada. They are sourced from local suppliers; the chicken is free range, the lamb is local ranch raised and all of the fish is wild caught, I believe.
They don't include too many carbohydrates, although here at the Desperate Dogs rehab ranch and dog hotel, we like carbs in food as they have a calming effect on the dog. Think comfort food for humans....if we were just eating steak, eggs, cheese etc all day long and had no carbs, we would be whipped up in a frenzy unless we were working out 24/7. Dogs that eat too much protein in their diet tend to be more frenzied if they don't run for hours, as the energy created by that protein has nowhere to go. I use the Chicken and Burbank potato and the lamb and apple as base food here at the ranch. To that we add our own home made food with fresh meat and vegetables, legumes and fruits.

I do have a recipe for home made food however I can't pass it on without knowing more about your dog's health, its unique needs and physical exercise. All dogs are different, so we tend to tailor the diet to the dog in question having done an extensive fact find with the owner. For instance, one of our guests today, whom you can see on our facebook page, is Otto, a 14 year old Alzheimers patient. He eats a totally fresh food diet and needs a little more protein, but a simple easy to digest source. He ate turkey tonight with potatoes, carrots, parsley, apples and peas. Turkey tends to be easy on the stomach for oldies and yet is high in L-Tryptophan, which creates calm and peace. All food is medicine basically and can be used to create the state of mind, as well as body, that you want for your dog.

Different brands have different formulations and so differing levels of quality in each bag. The trick is to look at the ingredients and do your research...but REALLY look at what goes in that bag, some things appear to look good and wholesome until you take apart the language and realise its not what it seems. Its not a brand I would use here at the Desperate Dogs ranch for my boarding or rehabilitation guests....
